Pin trading on Cruise??

Yes! They even have one evening where it is trading with the captain.

Pardon the naive questions, I'm not a pin trader so am pretty new at this. I have a friend who is and has never been on a DCL ship, so I am planning to get some pins before I go and trade for some DCL ones for her as a gift. I don't need every pin out there, but it would be cool to get the "must have" DCL exclusives.

Anyone have any suggestions on how many pins I should plan to take (ballpark)? Best tips on when/where to trade, and any can't miss pins?

I got some inexpensive pins off eBay and traded for some DCL pins while on board. Most of the crew in the gift shops and customer service trade pins.

I am anxious to try this as well when we go on our cruise next November. I have family members who go to WDW every year and they love pin trading. I was curious if they did it on the DCL. Thank you!

Do they have pin trading on the cruise ships??

We were on the Fantasy last year. In the shops they had a book you could trade from.

There were also 6 DCL specific pins. When you purchased something at the shop, you could add a pin to your purchase for I think an additional $2.95

Check the navigator when you get on each day (Bring a highlighter). There is one night they have pin trading with the Crew!

Enjoy!

Tell them you want some Special DCL pins for a friend - the crew will help - also swing by the concierge desk when it's quiet...Have fun! pixiedust:

The shop CM's, the CM's at guest services, and those with the wipes outside the buffets usually have pin lanyards or pin binders to trade from. There is also a pin kiosk set up outside the shops most evenings and the above mentioned 'officer's trading night' is a lot of fun. I even did a few with other cruisers as I had one this guy wanted and gave it to him, and he insisted on giving me one in return. I've given lots to little kids to get them started on trading.

There are the 6 mystery pins available from the gift shops that are square and fit together like a film strip. There are also many pins for DCL for sale in the shops. Sometimes the CMs have a good supply of DCL pins, especially from prior sailings, especially on the Wonder; CMs have had Panama Canal and Mexican Riviera, Alaska, Hawaii pins to trade, all left over from earlier sailings.

There are so many you'd never get them all, but it's fun to pick out a group and try to collect them in that set. I got a set of Disney Babies as deck hands, there are a few with the year numbers that interconnect, there are Castaway Cay sets of the Mount Rustmore. Just have fun.

I believe most pin traders would frown on this practice, to say the least. Buying fake crappy pins on eBay to trade for authentic, quality pins is not cool. In fact it violates pin trading guidelines set forth by Disney.

First of all I buy real pins from reputable sellers. I only trade with cast members never other guests. I also purchase pins on the boat and at the parks.

I am so glad that I saw this! My boys were so into this on their trip to WDW with their grandparents and with us!

Excellent to know! Thank you!

My DD is pretty new to pin trading and on our Med cruise earlier this month, there were many opportunities to trade as well as buy new pins we haven't seen at the parks.

Also - on the Magic, the gift store (Mickey's Mates) sold these "mystery pins" for $3.95 (with a qualifying purchase). Since my daughter was in the store A LOT during the cruise, they were pretty lax about the qualifying purchase part. In fact, one time, she saw a cast member/store employee wearing a pin she had been looking for, but my daughter didn't have her pins with her. So the store employee let her buy a mystery pin and trade it on the spot for the pin the employee had on. With the cost of pins adding up (especially with the 20% VAT tax on the Med cruise), it was great to get authentic, trade-able pins at a bargain.

And yes, there were a few trading events during the cruise. They were listed in the personal navigators -- but the store employees also knew when they'd happen a few days in advance.

Enjoy!

I have bought Disney pins in lots off of ebay in the past and I have found them to be neither fake nor crappy. Just because someone doesn't pay $5 + for pins to trade doesn't mean they are doing something wrong. :rolleyes1

In fact, ebay is a great place to buy pins in bulk to trade at the parks or on the ships. :thumbsup2

Agreed! I have bought big lots of pins from EBay and have never seen fakes, traded at both DLR and WDW and never had any problems.

Excited that we can do pin trading on the ships, as my DD really loves it!!

On the 3 night Dream cruise, the pin trading with the crew was the last night. It was a lot of fun! They set up a little "shop" in the lobby atrium, and had about 10 crew members out there with their lanyards. It was nice to meet the crew members and hunt for some great pins!

I have also purchased authentic pins on my favorite resale website, and traded them with no problems. They weren't fake or crappy; I purchased from a reputable dealer in Disney pin trading pins. Most were nicer than the ones I have found on CM lanyards at the parks!

My daughter and I had fun this time trading for the DCL set we found on board; we also are trying to build the alphabet set and she collects the princess pins.

Have fun! This is a nice way to make some great memories~
