All this talk of pin trading is getting me and DD6 very pumped up about our cruise in Jan. How do we get started? Do we buy pins?
Any info/tips appreciated!!:D :D

that is exactly what got us started. Unfortunately, living in Nebraska, we're too far from Disney to do this often.

To get started, we went to our Disney store at the mall and bought a bunch of pins. They were on sale...yippee! But.....reason for the sale was the Disney store then closed.

Now we can no longer get pins locally, but we had a great time trading them on the ship. ;)

oooh Ok..So I can go to the Disney store and buy pins..cool! My DD will really love this. Is there a special way to display them?

you can also buy pins on EBay.... you may want to try the Disney catalog too.

The way it is done is you buy a lanyard and you wear it around your neck. You pin the pins on the lanyard to display them for all to see. When you go on the ship you will see cast members that workin in the stores wearing them. If you want any pin on the lanyard just ask to trade and they will. the only way they won't trade is ifthey already have that pin on their lanyard. Then at certain times everynight they have a cart that they bring out in the lobby and it has pins that you can't buy in the stores. This is when a lot of the pin traders come out. Also on the cart is a book and you can trade you pins for the ones in the book. Sometimes there are rare pins that wree LE or Surprise pins. Once you build your collection you can but a pin trading bad which will store all your pins and keep them from harms way.

*Also if you go to the parks they do this. If your goin to the parks tell me cause i can tell you all the hang out spots.*

When i went to Disney for Christmas 2003 i started with no pins. I left with a little over 20 pins!!!!!!!!

Good luck and i hope this helped.:bounce:

I know the disney store online is having a sale on pins - Our local disney store no longer carries pins - I think a lot of them no longer carry pins - just an FYI -

The Dis'ers Rule!! That is DD talking. Ok I am on my way to Ebay and the Disney Online store...

What are the pin trading rules?

Welcome to pin trading--beware--it's addictive!

Hop over to the Collector's board. There is a lot of information over there about pin trading. It is a fun hobby and you can meet a lot of really nice people (but beware because just as in every aspect of life--there are "sharks" out there.)

My best advice to you is to buy what you like, trade for what you like and DON'T EVER BUY EXTRA PINS HOPING THAT THEY WILL GO UP IN VALUE SO THAT YOU CAN SELL THEM LATER!! (hind sight is 20/20 on pin purchasing!) That is the quickest way to get burned.

I don't know all the rules, just some -

The pins have to be a "Disney" pin in order to trade with a CM (the pin will be stamped disney on the back)

You don't have to trade if you don't want to -

CM's have to trade

I know someone else will help me out here -

This is so great. What does it mean "Cast members have to trade"? If I see something I like, they have to trade??

Thank you! My DD and I are going to have a blast!!

Remember, like i said before if the cast member already has that pin they do not have to trade with you. You cannot trade Fantasy Pins which are bootleg disney pins. If your new you really don't have to worry about them. If you have any uestions at all email me at mynameismojo_jojo@yahoo.com I am a big time pin trader. I will try to help in every way possible. Later Days.

PS. Oh ya! A cool site that was giving to me when i first started out is dizpins.com It's a pretty good site:smooth:

Thank you all for your help. I think pin trading is a nice way to bring my shy little girl out of her shell..with Mommy by her side, of course!

I have been pin trading / collecting since the beginning at WDW.

It is a great family activity. Last count I was at over 7000 disney pins, and my DD, 7, has over 500 in her pin bag.

Another way to get pins at good prices is at cheappins.com. Click on Disney on the left.

Remember buy and collect what you like, NOT what someone else tells you you should like!

If you email me, I would love to send your daughter for free my fantasy pin that my wife designed. It would be a fun pin for your daughter to have and display on her lanyard, or in her pin bag.

The pic of the pin is below.

I'm new at this pin trading thing too so I have a question.
I want to wear my pins, even the ones I don't want to trade, is there a way to somehow mark the ones that are up for trade?

How about two separate lanyards? Or if you only want to wear one, you could put your traders on one side of the lanyard and your keepers on the other and let people know which side is for trading. They also sell small pin bags, if you don't mind carrying one around. :D

Cool, since I'm new, I don't have many pins so putting the "keepers" on one side and the 'traders" on the other is a GREAT idea! Thanks!!

You can wear all your pins if you want. I wear all my Lilo and Stitch pins and i don't trade them for the world. The reason why i waer them is because if someone wants to trade a rare ;pin i have something to give. I like to display and show off.:smooth: Not saying i don't trade. I only trade when i want to, not when other people want to. Happy Pin Trading. Later Days

I have two boys.... they were 8 and 4 when we went to disney last time... 10 and 6 now. I bought 25 of the same pin from www.cheappins.com (12 each and a lanyard). I tought them to give a pin and get a pin. and to diversify. basically since i am in the money management business i am training them for life....it is easier if you are trading away pins you have multiples of. Then when you have diversified you have/ can learn to really trade.
