I cannot understand why people consider that pin trading is their hobby. There is no direct purpose.

The actual hobby is pin collecting and the only purpose of pin trading is to fill in spaces in a collection.

The true value of pins is very low,. For example, a few days ago JudySue and I spent the time and money to get the Figment pins for our (complete) Figment pin collection, and also for some out of town friends of ours. We woud not have gone just to get pins for trading.

I think I have two separate hobbies.

Pin Collecting -- The acquiring and long time storing of pins.

Pin Trading -- The social activities associated with collecting, but not limited to acquiring pins for my collection.

Or, perhaps my two hobbies are:

Pin Collecting
Pinpal Collecting

:teeth:

Actually, I do have 2 hobbies--collecting and trading.

I can collect without the activity of trading, and I find that hobby a little boring; not much challenge to just buying pins and sticking them in a binder or a frame or a basket (my various places for keeping them.

Collecting via the trading method, is a separate activity, and therefore in my mind it's own hobby, and the whole process involved in trading gives me a rush that I find lacking in picking up a pin in the park, or buying from the secondary market.

The social interraction that results from the activity of trading is in my mind a bonus I get from my pin trading hobby.

::yes::

Good post---any other thoughts from anyone?????

I cannot understand why people consider that pin trading is their hobby. There is no direct purpose.

To me the direct purpose is to expand my collection. Even so, I have traded just to trade, not because I need the pin I was getting, but because the person I was trading with wanted the pin.

Pin collecting is my hobby. Trading for a pin is just a different way of obtaining them and I frankly I find it more fun then just buying.

As a side note, I don't need a clear cut direct purpose for me to do something and enjoy it.

If this pin thing was just about buying, I would have quit long ago. I think the search is more fun than actually having it in my hand.
