Pillars of the Earth Miniseries starts 7/23

I watched the first one and not having read the book or knowing much of the history I found myself a wee bit confused as to who was who, what relationship various people had with each other and asking "Why?" with some of the things that were happening. I will probably watch a couple more to see if I can get more into them because I don't think you can make a real judgment call based on one episode. I'm all for a good book so I might have to try to find this book.

I just set my DVR to tape the replay of it. I hope I like it. I need a new show since so many of mine are done! :thumbsup2

i am not familiar with this one...........so...........in a nutshell...........what is the story?

If I tell you the story in a nutshell...it will turn you off immediately.

If someone had told me....I never would have read the two books and they are probably two of my favorite books of all time.

Pillars of the Earth
World Without End

Both by Ken Follett

Each is approximately 1000 (or so) pages and centers around the building of a cathedral in 12th century England.

The second book takes place 200 years after the first in the same location.

I finished the first book and mourned that it was over. I fell in love with the characters.

World Without End takes place in the same location, but with all new characters and I was certain that I wasnt going to like it because after 200 years...the characters cant be the same.

The characters from POTE are referenced in WWE, but the new characters are just as wonderful as those in the first book.

I read these books until 5am. I read in lines. I read at stop signs. I read in the car on the way to the podcasts. I devoured these books.

Again...I mourned when WWE ended...maybe harder that time because I knew there was no more story.

I have both books on my Kindle and I'm fairly certain that once the mini-series is over....that I'll be left wanting more and I'll re-read them.

Give Pillars a try. I was hooked from the very beginning....some arent.

I'd like to know what you think.

Absolutely must agree with Kevin- If anyone had tried to describe the plot to me before I read them, I woulda ran. Both my mom and GF have said to me since seeing the commercials for the mini-series, that it doesn't seem like my kinda thing. I was going strictly off Kevin's raves, and I must say, they are well warranted.

The books are great, and so far I am pleased with the mini-series. I can understand that it would be hard to follow all the characters if you haven't read the book, just cause there are so many of them- it was hard for me to keep track of them when I first started the book!

Can't wait to see more of the mini-series!!

Yay Netflix! :woohoo: No cable! :sad1:

Plus, O...M...G...! It has Matthew Macfadyen in it! He played Mr. Darcy in the movie Pride and Prejudice!

Wasn't he the best Mr. Darcy ever? OMG, the eyes on that man!
Loved Pillars of the Earth and World Without End - both excellent books. Definately NOT light reading.

I loved loved loved both books. A friend of mine from an old book club in Idaho lent them to me and I'm ashamed to say that she did not get them back when I moved to Washington last year. :rolleyes1

I watched the first episode last night on free Starz and am now desponent because the free weekend is over and I'm left hanging. Darn. Will definately put them in my Netflix saved queue.

I loved it and it looks like the spent some bucks making the series look good.

That being said, it's a 1000 page book being condensed into 16 hours, from what I understand.

Had I not read the book....I would have been completely lost.

Besides...the book gives so much detail. I fell in love with these people.

I dont think the mini-series will have the same impact.

I agree. I've seen the first two episodes and I feel like I'm visiting with beloved friends. I don't know how much I would be enjoying it had I not read the book.

I'm betting that after the series is over I'll be re-reading Pillars because I'll want to spend more time in that world.

I loved Pillars, but had a difficult time getting into World Without End. I may pick it up again in the future. :)

got it...........7.99...............the print is soooooo small.....lucky for me i am getting new glasses this week.....:3dglasses.....will keep you updated on how i like it.

I adored him as Darcy.:lovestruc Walking across the field in that jacket was drool-worthy. And in this show his eyes are even more to die for! Feel kind of bad though bc he's a monk, but you get over it real fast haha! :rotfl:

Just watched episodes 1-3 today and I am hooked! Great show, amazing actors. Can't wait to watch it unfold :thumbsup2

I tried to watch Pillars on Netflix yesterday, but just could not get into it. Not sure why. I remember liking the book.

That happened to me at first. I originally started watching it on DVR the other day and just wasn't into it. But I was also playing with my laptop, cooking, and going through mail all around that time. I ended up turning it off and waiting until it could get my full attention. Yesterday, I was beat after a tough day at summer school and was on the couch with just that on. I have to say - after the initial part of them trying to fill in back story, I was totally into it. I watched almost 2 hours straight without it feeling like that much time had gone by. I do better with TV shows and movies when I'm actually paying attention to them and not multi-tasking. Being a teacher as well - I'm sure you are the same - multi-tasking is a part of life! LOL :)

Oh, I loved both books so much! I'm getting into the series. Is it wrong to be strongly attracted to a monk?

We are midway through this series on Blu-ray disc. It's actually very good, though I'm not getting as into this series as most other premium cable television series that have been broadcast in recent years.
