Tuesday, October 20th - We Took a Left Turn at Albuquerque and Ended Up in a Ditch!
This was supposed to be one of many stops in our drink-around-the-world quest, but there is something about the Ditch .... it's small, dark, and cozy ... the service is good, the food is better, and the drinks are awesome! And when friends unexpectedly and expectedly join you, why it's downright amazing how a one-hour visit stretches into a five-hour drink-a-thon.
Yes; someone parked a stroller at the bar entrance. And people think my priorities are messed up?
Look at those tequilas glimmering in the alcove...
We started off with one drink apiece and a jumble of appetizers; I apologize but even with the receipt I'm not sure which margarita is which, so I have to guess.
Wild Passion Fruit Margarita?
Blood Orange Margarita?
Guacamole & Wagon Wheel Chips
Shrimp Ceviche
Crab Tostadas
So there we were, finishing up our drinks and snacks and discussing how best to make Norway interesting from a booze perspective, when cdtommie came in with his wife and another couple. Big waves and hallooos were exchanged and they pulled up a table next to us and we started chatting about our respective trips so far and where the best meals had been found. And the thing is, you can't sit in the Ditch with an empty glass ... it just feels wrong, so we ordered another round.
Jalapeno Lime Margarita?
Peach Margarita? I don't even like peach-flavored drinks ...
Now all this time, Jay had been texting Chelsi & Jason to let them know we'd "ditched" ... ha ha ha ... Chefs, and were resting comfortably in the tequila cave with Tommie and his wife. The question was: how soon could they join us?
The couple in question walked through the doorway a minute later - now that's what I call soon!!
Another big hallooooo erupted from the table at which point the bartenders and wait staff probably had dollar signs dancing in their heads. As for other Ditch patrons, I wouldn't be surprised if they thought we were a bunch of troublemakers what with all the noise and general hilarity unfolding in our section of the establishment. But if you can't act like a donkey in a tequila bar, while seated under a wall mural that includes a donkey, then when can you?
There's one other thing I'm going to mention, and then I'm just going to post the pictures because that's more fun in this case. I noticed that there were two ladies down near the end of our group of tables, and one of them was wearing a sparkly birthday party hat. Nothing catches tipsy Bendy's nearsighted attention like bright, shiny, sparklies!! So the next thing I knew I had plunked myself down right next to them and started a conversation ... which is not something I typically do. Turns out they had driven over from Tampa to celebrate the birthday girl's day with a couple of margaritas. We invited them to join in with us and somehow I managed to convince everyone to have their picture taken with the special hat ... amazing what a little tequila can do for people, isn't it? And this may sound silly, but I'd had such a wonderful birthday trip that I really wanted to spread the fun and good feelings around so to that end, I bought her a birthday drink ... and got one for myself as well!
You can perhaps forgive me for not remembering too many details from this point forward.
Chelsi & Tommie
Good friends, good drinks, good times!
Maybe this is peach?
There goes Tokyo ... go, go Godzilla!!
Tommie & Jay
Susan and Chelsi
More drinks ...
Never too many ...
I'd be sad too, if I ordered booze and ended up with two glasses of water.
