Wednesday, October 14th - It's a Surprise ... Sort Of; Now Let's Go Have a Drink!
Luckily while we were finishing No Way Jose not in a soup bowl, Jay received a text from the BCV that our room was ready. This made me very happy – I cannot relax at WDW until we have checked in and unpacked. Then, and only then, am I truly able to feast and frolic like a pig wallowing in mud after a particularly fine bucket of slops.
We’ve stayed in many different areas of the BCV over the years and while all the rooms are homey and comfy, some locations are definitely better than others. Upon first inspection our 1-bedroom villa appeared to be a prime spot overlooking Epcot Resorts Boulevard - there were lots of trees and we had a fine view of Spaceship Earth in the distance.
Unfortunately the balcony furniture was suffering from a severe case of Florida black mold and who really wants to sit on their balcony and listen to the drone of passing traffic and inhale exhaust fumes while sipping chilled wine?
Not us.
We prefer the delightful and romantic symphony that is late-night road construction.
These were my only issues, for lack of a better word, with our villa. The room itself was in fine condition and other than a few lightbulbs that needed to be replaced we were well pleased. We also had what appeared to be a lifetime's supply of towels which always makes me happy.
As we were unpacking and getting ourselves organized there was a knock on the door.
OOOOOOOHHHH!
I know what this must be!
Giving in to the spendy-bendy impulse that I grapple with on a daily basis, I had ordered Jay and me a little sumpin-sumpin from the Walt Disney World Florist. They didn’t make it easy this year … the number of items offered that are worth the money has dwindled considerably since I first started making a habit of surprising the hubba on our annual WDW vacations. Luckily I was able to get my hands on the DVC wine and cheese basket along with an additional item called Sweet on You.
DVC Welcome Home
Sweet on us!!
The DVC basket included a bottle of chardonnay, a Mickey-head wine stopper, two cheese spreads, some herbed crackers, and some apples. At one time I think it also included wine glasses etched with Mickey-heads but there weren't any in our basket. Jay and I agree it was probably for the best ... those glasses do not enhance the taste of any wine, not even dandelion wine.
The Sweet on You which was included in the basket is a Mickey-head shaped milk chocolate candy box filled with white, milk, and dark chocolates. The chocolates were also shaped like Mickey's head and each had a special message like "dream" or "wish" or "magic" written on it. We enjoyed the whimsy of this little treat and thought it was surprisingly tasty, too.
Once all the business of unpacking was complete it was time for Jay and me to head over to Epcot and get our DVC annual passes and Twit card (formerly known as the DDE). Tremble in fear F&W Festival, Jay and Bendy have returned to do battle once more!!
Since it was such a warm, humid afternoon, Jay and I weren't interested in eating anything from the kiosks. We also had reservations later in the evening for the dessert party at the Magic Kingdom and wanted to save some room to enjoy that, so naturally we ended up in Mexico in order to pay a visit to the Tequila Ditch, aptly christened by TDC Nala.
The place wasn't crowded at all so we pulled up a table and immediately placed an order for two margaritas and some crab tostadas.
Duranzo Margarita
I ordered the Duranzo - Blanco Tequila, St. Germain Liqueur, peach nectar, fresh lime juice, and agave nectar served on the rocks with a cactus-lemongrass salt rim ($11.50). We make St. Germain margaritas at home, but not nearly as good as this one. It was light and refreshing and not very sweet at all, which made me very happy.
Jalapeno y Limon Margarita
Jay ordered the spicy jalapeno margarita which was made with Blanco Tequila, jalapeno-lime juice, agave nectar, and fresh lime juice served on the rocks with an hibiscus Himalayan salt rim ($12.50). Jay enjoyed this very much since he likes spicy foods and drinks. I took a taste of it and thought it was like drinking salsa ... ick ... but the hubby was happy so that's all that mattered.
We've found our home away from home away from home!
And to help soak up some of the alcohol, because these margaritas packed a punch, we split an order of Tostadas de Jaiba - seasoned blue crab meat tostadas with chipotle mayo and valentina sauce ($11).
We thought these were terrific! A liberal helping of shredded crab meat sprinkled over spicy (but not too spicy) mayo and crowned with some avocado and greenery. YUMMMMMM! Jay and I liked them so much and thought they paired so well with the drinks that we ordered more on another visit later in our trip.
Our first impression of the Tequila Cave was highly favorable. It's a great and long-needed addition to the Mexico pavilion and judging by the crowds we saw there over our 10-day visit it's very popular with everyone, even the pre-school crowd. If you need a solid foundation on which to construct your day and/or evening of drunken Epcot debauchery, consider stopping at the Ditch. The drinks are strong, the snacks are tasty, and the boozers are a friendly, welcoming bunch!
