We had a G2 Geomagnetic Storm on the night of 20 - 21 December 2015. Melbourne is positioned south enough that the camera sensor can pick up Lady Aurora Australis IF you head out to points where the light pollution is low; but not necessarily visually see the Aurora. I headed down the coast to Point Addis; which is just west of Bell's Beach (where the surfing is held).
She made an appearance early at 10.30 pm and I only just made it to a vantage point with enough time to set up, take a couple of pictures before she disappeared. You could totally see the pink by eye at this time; albeit a lot weaker than what appeared on the camera sensor.
Most sane photographers packed up at 11.30 pm.
Me? I'm not in that sane category!!
A couple of us stayed.....and were rewarded by the Lady at around 1 am. I could see the light beams clearly and see her dancing around in monochrome; but not in the colours that appeared on the camera. So glad I stayed!
