Disneyland Fire Dept. Engine No.1 - Steve Finley
December 2, 2015

Yesterday December 2, 2015 on my solo visit to Disneyland I hopped aboard Engine No.1 for a ride up to the castle. As he’s been doing for more than 40 years now CM Steve was safely maneuvering us along a busy Main St. Steve let me know that if things got a little tense I should just close my eyes, as that was what he’d be doing too.

Steve explained that this Main St. vehicle went into service at Disneyland in 1958. It was Walt’s favorite to drive, and he often would.

You may recognize this vehicle as the one Walt had his picture take in, with Micky standing where I was riding today. This now famous, and sad picture is thought to be the last one Walt ever had taken of him in the park, this was the fall of 1966. The picture and its story are a favorite of mine.

As I disembarked I thanked Steve, and shook his hand for the safe ride.

If I recall correctly I once before had taken a ride on good ‘ole No.1. I’ll be sure to do it again soon. And I’ll congratulate and thank “Steve” again.
