i might have to start using a pseudonym with this next round of dumb questions but

does the picture info, shutter speed etc automatically come with the picture or is there some kind of camera or image processing function you have to set to get all those details

On your Rebel XT all that information will be saved in the image automatically. Simply right-click on the image and click "Properties", then click the "Summary" tab at the top. You may also have to click the "Advanced" button. This will show you all the "exif" details of your image file.

To see all of that info while a pic is still in the camera, press the > button to view your pics, then pres the Info button. Some info wil come up on top of the pic; press the Info button a second time to get a complete set of the EXIF data, including a histogram. This data will stay on for each pic you display until you press the Info button again to turn it off.
