I have decided that on our next trip I am going to pick a pearl (or two) for myself but kiddo might actually be very interested too. Are there any boy appropriate necklaces that these can be set into? maybe pirate themed or something? or is it all super feminine? I have found some after market pearl cages that might work especially on a leather strap or something.

I've found they have more 'girly/women' selections than anything. I would say your best bet is to get your own cage and cord necklace. Or you can go, see what they have, and if you dont like anything get your own cage/cord necklace at that time.

My 14 year old son and I watched Pick a Pearl last time, and he wants to do it the next time we go down to WDW. At worst case, I can find him a ring box or something like that to keep the pearl in. It will be a nice keepsake. I still have the small vial of gold that I panned for at Knot's Berry Farm back in 1978!

You don't have to get it in jewelry - they can put it in a little bottle for you with sand (I think it's free...? But my memory is failing me). That would be much less "girly", a nice little keepsake for him, AND save you money.

yes, a keepsake like that would be great! something he can bring in to show and tell lol. which is all he ever does (every year) with his genuine piece of a meteorite necklace ;)

thanks everyone. I just want to be prepared if he wants to do it and I suspect he is going to!

The last time my DD got a bottle with sand we had to purchase it. It was not free. I think it was around $7 or $8. Not sure what it would be now.

Exactly what I was going to suggest. My DD13 doesn't even do that - she just likes her collection of loose pearls! I offered to get her one of the bottles last summer and she said no thanks.

that's fine... even if not free it sounds like a good option. It's disney. nothing is free ;)

My nephew was obsessed with doing this a couple trips ago. He was more than satisfied with the pearl itself and the experience of doing it. Being the only one with a bag, I had the honor of carrying his pearl the rest of the day. He kept asking if it was alright and I had to pull it out several times during the day to reassure him.

I had no idea about the bottle of sand you could buy for the pearls! We've watched Pick a Pearl before but I've never asked my boys if they wanted to do it because I figured they would have no interest in a necklace and it would get lost just rolling around in a box or their drawer somewhere, but at least younger DS would probably like getting one and putting it in the bottle. We go quite often so I'm always looking for something new to offer them, big or small :)
