PI backstory

You know, I should have realized that even Pleasure Island has a fantastic, Imagineer-created backstory, but I never bothered to check. So imagine my surprise when as I was flipping through one of my books this morning I came across the detailed history of Merriweather Pleasure and his company, and how it eventually became Pleasure Island! Now I want to make sure to look for some of the stuff I read about.

It was also interesting to read the "history" of some of the clubs (such as Westside Videopolis, which eventually morphed into 8-Trax).


Anyway, just thought I'd share this with those of you who, like me, didn't realize this place had an elaborate backstory. Read about it... it's quite fun!

Sounds interesting! In what book did you read this? Does the same book provide background for other parts of WDW?

I believe the backstory was detailed in the book "Since the World Began"

Yup, that's the book. Since the World Began. The funny thing is, I've owned the book for years and years, but never actually read it. I guess I just liked flipping through and saying, "look at the pretty pictures" in a Homer Simpson-esque voice. But for some reason, today the fact that there were actual WORDS jumped out at me, and it just happened to be on a page that said "Pleasure Island's Backstory."

I was rather intrigued in that, unlike some of the other backstories (such as, say, Blizzard Beach or Typhoon Lagoon), the Pleasure Island backstory was much more historical and very, very detailed (as in what each club originally was used for, etc). Perhaps in keeping with the more mature theming of the island, they gave it a more mature backstory!
