Phrases/expressions you don't hear anymore

pneumonia hole - as in window.

"Close that pneumonia hole". Now the younger folks on XDH's side of the family are saying it. I think they heard it from me and think it's funny. :rolleyes1

Use that one all the time here. Which goes right along with "Close the door - you weren't raised in a barn"
And "raccoon hatch" which refers to an outside door left open, allowing easy access to the garbage, bird seed, or what have you.

I use the 10 foot pole ALL the time and I'm young!! I won't touch bananas with a 10 foot pole.

I say silly old fashioned things all of the time, mostly to avoid swearing. Goodness gracious, Oh Mylanta, Flippin' Jack Crack (I coined that one myself when I hurt my toe really badly).

"Heavens to Betsy" is one of my favorites. I also like to say "Help me Rhonda."

My Grandma used to say "Ye Gods." I can still hear her say it. :littleangel: My sweet Grandpa still says "And how," whenever we tell him a story. That's always his response. :)

As easy as shootin' fish in a barrel.

I'm 20 and I use a lot of expressions I grew up hearing adults say and when I say them my friends don't get them.

"To each their own" is one of my favorites that my friends can't get. I used it on Twitter once and the person thought I was crazy and dumb because it made no sense to them

Bedclothes
Chiffarobe
Oleo
"My foot" (Your cookies taste better than mine, my foot!")
Horsefeathers
scram
Hood (to describe a person)

Six of one, half dozen of the other.

My mom used to say that all the time. I never understood what it meant until a couple years ago when DH explained it to me. I also realized that I had the whole expression wrong. I used to think my mom was saying "Six and one half does the other." No wonder I had no idea what it meant!

I say things are "swell" sometimes just to be retro.

I also like to say "Peachy keen jellybean" just as a shoutout to Grease... surprisingly few people catch that.

My sister tried to avoid swearing around her kids (not always successful!) so she made up the expression "muzzer scuzzer!" It's filled a void in our collective vocabulary for many years.

Queen Colleen

"drop a dime" as in make a phone call.

I heard someone say that recently, and although I had heard it before and knew what it meant, I wondered how long it's been since phone calls cost a dime.

eta - Thanks for the fun topic!

I'm afraid I can answer that! ;)

The thing that reminds me of my father who has been passed for years is
two bits

Since I grew up in the 70's GROOVY MAN

Hoodlums and shenanigans.

As an example: Those hoodlums are up to shenanigans again.

Fun topic! Lots of things I haven't heard in a dog's (or coon's) age!

referring to unknown folks as "Mac" or "fella"
heebie jeepies

Mac - oldie, but goodie

My older brother & friends used to say "FAR OUT" which morphed into "FARM OUT" - ugh!

"Corn-fed" was the nickname my friends in the CP gave me.

When we used to sit around the kitchen table on summer nights playing Rook as a family, Papaw used to "shoot the moon" so he could "hit the hay." Knowing that bedtime was calling him we'd always bid against him because we wanted him to stay up later and keep playing (this was usually around 9 PM). Rarely did he miss that bedtime. :)

"Till the cows come home" was often used on the farm but it was usually an actual measurement of time. The cows DID come home around the same time each day.

"Laws-a-mercy" was a favorite of Mamaw's.

I'm sure there are many more that I'm not thinking of right now...

I use "willy-nilly" all the time, DH says I sound like an old lady when I do. My parents used to say, "well I'll be..." sometimes followed by "a monkey's uncle". Also, "well that's a fine how do you do".

I too make up phrases to avoid swearing in front of DD such as "sweet mother of pearl" or "son of a biscuit".

I say "willy nilly" too.
