In the Katie Couric thread, the OP used the expression "no great shakes," and some people had never heard it before. That was one of the things my grandparents used to say and a lot of their expressions aren't used much anymore, like:

Peach - as in "He's a peach of a man." (Why was it decided that a peach was the best fruit to be?)

Here's your hat. What's your hurry?

Just my dignity - in response to "Did you get hurt when you fell?"

I wouldn't touch him with a 10-foot pole.

I know there are others, but can't think of them. What don't you hear anymore?

1. 2 shakes of a lambs tail ( It will just take a second) apparently lamb tails must shake quickly.

2. Whats doing? My nana used to always say this to ask whats going on?

I still use two shakes of a lambs tail. My grandkids think it is funny.

"drop a dime" as in make a phone call.

I heard someone say that recently, and although I had heard it before and knew what it meant, I wondered how long it's been since phone calls cost a dime.

eta - Thanks for the fun topic!

Around here dropping a dime means telling the police on someone. City girl here!

Come on over here and sit a "spell."

I was born in the south and live in the north. I miss a lot of those quirky sayings :)

Whenever we were hurt, either physically or our feelings, and we cried about it, my mother would say "Stop crying, you'll be a lady before your mother is." I haven't the faintest idea what that means. Can anyone help?

I just thought of another one. After we moved out of the family home, every time we'd come back for a visit and then got ready to leave again, my dad would say "Bye, now. Write when you find work."

Years from now, my DD#1 is going to tell her daughter that every time she (DD) left my house to go home, I would say "Drive carefully, have a super special good day, don't kill the xxx (whoever she was working with at the time), and I love you." I had to remind her not to kill anyone because at least one a week she came home threatening to kill someone.

"Happy as a clam" which is short for Happy as a clam at high tide.

Wait a cotton pickin' minute!

I still use Two shakes of a lamb's tail.

My mom and did still say:

Good Golly
My golly
Gosh golly
Holy Moley
Jeepers
Here's your hat what's your hurry
Heavens to Betsy (or something like that!)

......oh the list goes on. My dd17 gets a kick out of it.

Just thought of another one.......when you get home after a long drive, "home again, home again, jiggity jig"

You make a better door than a window. (When someone is blocking your view.)

Till the cows come home. (Staying out late)

Just my pride. (Another response to Did you hurt yourself?)

Sharp as a tack. (Smart)

Oh, good ones, Katelly. I've also heard "Golly Jeepers" and "Heavens to Betsy"

Dumb as a post lol

I am a big fan of the word lousy, as in "lots of".

"This place is lousy with lovebugs"

Also use these a bit:

bees knees
referring to unknown folks as "Mac" or "fella"
heebie jeepies

My friend's mother used to always say...

"Lord, love a duck".....I never knew what she was talking about then and I still don't get it today. :rotfl:

I try to use the word bully whenever I can.

"Well bully for you!"

"Just like this". When someone asks you why you did something and you don't have a concrete answer, you say "Just like this".

People referring to their youth or their prime as their "salad days".

My "salad days" are the days I try to diet. :lmao:

Come to think of it - that's usually the context. I still think it originated from the fact that your phone call to the cops - or CPS - or whoever cost a dime at the payphone. I don't hear it much anymore.

Nowadays we can say - I'm going to take advantage of my monthly service plan and call CPS on that 8 year old who's not wearing a coat.

Don't let the door split ya where the good lord split ya.

I miss all silly sayings from the south too. 13 more years of the frozen north.
