Hello all those in the know.

I have photoshop elements and an instruction book yet I can't figure out how to do the following.

I have a background picture, a layer with a white square on it (so my background picture looks like a frame around my white square) I wish to write something in text and then cut out the text so you can see the back ground layer through my white square..... Does that make sense????

Is this possible and if so could someone give me a quick idea of how to do it?

Thanks in Advance.

Sounds similar to the name fill process that has been described on some of the threads i have come across. I just bought PSE 8 and I am having a hard time doing the same thing. :confused3 What book did u buy? The Photoshop for dummies has been suggested on the boards. here is a link to the one of the photoshop threads http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2367365, hope this may be of some help there is a good youtube instruction video on here but it is not for PSE8 so it did not help me. If you are working with PSE8 and figure this out please post any helpful information you may find. Good Luck!

The text and white square are going to need to be on the same layer for this to work. Write the text in a color other than white. Then on that same layer, use the marquee tool to draw the box that you need. Fill the box with white, and use the fill also on any enclosed spaces inside the letters that don't fill the first time. Next, simplify the layer. Then you can use the wand tool to select and then delete the text.

Another way to do this would be to create the box on a separate blank workspace. Add the text to that, and merge visible layers. Next, use the wand tool to remove the text, and then move the box to the background.

I don't feel like I'm explaining it well. Does that make any sense?

Thank you very much,

I think I did what you told me to do.

I had my background picture. Then I wrote my text (which created new layer) then I used the rectangular marquee tool to make my box, which I then filled with white.

That gave me this.

OK not really elaborate but I am just starting out.

The Instruction book I have is for Photoshop Elements 7 called the Missing Manual by Barbara Brundage it is quite helpful.
