Okay, so I am learning a little about Photoshop, but I am such a newbie! What I would like to do is make t-shirts for my son's 8th grade graduation. I would like them to say Class of 2008, but I would like each child's picture to be visible inside the words. Or, since our mascot is a stingray, I could put the kids pictures inside the outline of a stingray. Anyone know how to do this? thanks in advance!

I'm learning too, with Gimp, and this is something I'm trying to learn. I'm interested in the most efficient "steps" to create this!

I just figured this out on photoshop elements.

1. pick a picture.
2. choose a thick font and type the name on top of pic.
3. go over to the right side to the layers box and click on the text layer. push ctrl and then left click.
4. click on the background layer in the layer box (pic) push ctrl then j. it will make a new layer.
5. now click on the eyes in the layer box next to the text layer and the background layer (orig pic) to turn off.
you should now see just the text with the pic inside.

Was that clear as mud?

I think I actually know what you're talking about! It's probably not *exactly* the same since it's a different program but I'm familiar with the layers and making new ones. I had the picture part and putting the font over that but I couldn't figure out how to get the pictures "through" the font. I can't wait to get home and give this a try!!!! :woohoo:

A different way to do the same thing(but not exactly what I am trying to do)

1. Open your picture. Double click on it and rename it so that you can edit it.

2. Click on the T in the left hand menu. Type any word you want over the picture. Highlight to change the font or size.

3. Drag the picture layer on the right side underneath the text layer.

4. Hold down CTRL and move the cursor between the two layers(right hand side) until you see a circle where you cursor would be.

5. Click and the picture will be inside your words.

6. Chose edit or maybe image at the top menu and choose free transform. Then you can make the font bigger and move it to different areas of the picture.

Ok no such luck for me. :sad1: I don't know what I'm not doing-or it could be that I'm not using the same program as ya'll. I was able to use a picture as my background layer, create a new layer with my font (text) and could not get any farther than that to make the picture come through only in the shape of the letters. Oh well...at least it was only an hour and I did get more familiar with all of the menus and options! :)

Hi everyone

I've been hanging around the disboards for a couple of months now, mainly in the UK area as thats where I'm from.

However I love digital scrapbooking so I thought I'd come over to say hi.

I use photoshop CS3 and can do most things, DH can do the things I can't. Here is how I would make a photo inside text.

1.Make a new document the size you need.
2.Select text and type your words, making the font the size you need (you need to choose a really thick font like Impact)
3.Go to the layers window and right click on the text layer you should get 'bleding options' come up. Click on this and tick 'stroke' this puts a line around the font, change the size in the size tab to make it nice and thick (20 is good) Click OK on the left and go back to your document.
4.Now click on the layer tab along the top of your screen and select 'merge layers' or 'flatten image'
5. Now you can erase the centre colour of your text to make it transparent.
6. Finally open the photo you need and drag it onto your document.
7. Tricky Part - you will now need to duplicate your text layer so that you have two text layers this is so that you can swap the order of the layers. Now drag the text layer to the top layer by clicking on it and dragging it up the layer box. You will be able to see your photo through the text.

PM if you need more help, it is a five minute job and I'b be happy to do it for you if you want.

Here is a birthday card I made so you get the idea.

I am glad I ran across this thread. I have been fighting with software to figure out how to this.:thumbsup2

WELL I DID NOT GET IT TO WORK. AS SOME WOULD YOU "HAVE TO BE SMARTER THAN THE PROGRAM YOU ARE WORKING WITH".

Don't feel bad! I can't get it to work either! We got our stimulas check (direct deposit) today so I think I'm going shopping tonight for some software! The stuff I downloaded just isn't cutting it! :headache: Maybe then I'll be able to figure it out!

I got it to work yesterday but it talkes me a while to get it to work. What software did you download?????? I downloaded "jasc paint shop pro 8" I like working with it and the more I play with it the more I get things to work the way I want it to. :rolleyes1 I guess I will just keep playing. Maybe some day I will be as good as the disigners on this site :rotfl:

Yay that you got it to work! That's so wonderful! I downloaded Gimp but went out tonight and bought Photoshop Elements 6. I'm trying to get it to work right now...hopefully I'll figure it out soon! :confused3

BTW-how did you get it to work? ;)

I can do it using the masked text type on PE6. I copy & paste it into a new document. I do have trouble doing another line of text. When I go to paste, the new text goes right on top of the original text no matter where my curser is. I even have tried making a new layer to add the 2nd line of text.

OK I have duplicate text layers and when I try to open the picture I want in the bubbles the text layers disappear:confused3 I guess I'm right along with the person who said you have to be smarter than what you're working with....I can't get it to work...I've been trying to learn how to make t shirts etc for like two days...I'm about to give up and just have someone make them for me LOL...I guess having an almost two year old and being preggo is taking up all of my patience cause I'm usually pretty good at this stuff...I have Photoshop CS if anyone can help PLEASE

I don't know too much but I don't think you can have multiple text layers-I think it all has to be one layer. Again, not sure!

What do you want in the bubbles?? I can give it a shot if you'd like and try to give you directions on what I did. Basically, here's what I do:

-background layer (picture that's going to be inside letters)
-on top of that I put my text (I've only done it with one layer)
-once I get my text, I apply a bevel to it (learned this on the DIS!!! this is where I got stuck!!!) then change the outline around the text to whatever color/size I want it to be
-once text is done, I select the background layer and duplicate it
-I have to move the duplicate layer on top of my text (that's just the way PE6 orders the layers I guess)
-I click the little "eye" icon on the left of the background layer (original) to turn it off
-press "alt" on my computer and click right between the duplicate and text layers (I get a little double circle icon with an arrow to know when it's in the right spot to click)
-once that's done, I'm able to move the background picture (duplicate layer) around to make it better fit into the letters or fill in any spaces that I need to

I HTH a little bit!!!

Please help...

I have been trying to do this all day and cannot figure it out. I would like to learn so I can make some for our trip to WDW and our first Cruise ever next year.

I have Photo Shop CS3 and can load a pic, type text and such. In the layer box on text I hit ctrl and remove the eye and it makes the text transparent. The minute I click on the pic the text goes away.

What am I doing wrong? Please help

My DH found this for me and I made a design for my son. I thought it would help since you are using GIMP too. I stop the steps after I finish "adjusting the levels." http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/The_Basics/
I just need to figure out how to get a nice colored border around the letters like Amy's designs. As soon as my picture hosting quits being a pain I will show you.
