PhotoPass, Memory Maker, And What's The Difference?

I have read, researched, YouTube'd, and everything else, and I still don't understand what these things are or what the difference is.

Can someone please explain them to me in the simplest terms possible? Explain this to me like I'm a third-grader, because everything I've read about it seems to assume that you already understand PhotoPass, which I don't.

I'm sorry to ask such a basic question here, but I seriously have no idea what is going on.

Photopass is the collection of photographers around the parks and resorts that will take photos of you in different scenic spots. You can then access these photos and buy them individually. MemoryMaker is a package you can purchase that allows you to download every single photo taken by the PhotoPass photographers along with ride photos for a flat-rate. You do not have to use MemoryMaker to purchase a photo, as you can purchase individually by photo, but by utilizing MemoryMaker, it can free-up your ability to need to drag a camera around across the parks.

Another question: the last time we went ('05), we could buy these printed-out attraction photos at the end of attractions. They'd have these cool effects on them and be in a nice cardboard "frame" (for lack of a better choice of words). Can you still do that?

Photopass is the system that holds all of the disney pictures and videos that disney takes of you. You do not have to buy any of those pictures. You can buy some, you can buy all, or you can buy none.

Memory Maker is an application that you can purchase, if you so choose. Memory Maker gets you access to download all of those Photo Pass pictures and videos, and even more pictures (professional disney pictures of random things throughout the parks.)

OK, so with PhotoPass, I can purchase photos individually, whereas with Memory Maker they're all mine, to do with as I please, for all eternity? Is that the general idea?

With MM, they are yours forever, BUT, there is a time limit that you have to download them by, THEN, they are yours forever.
You can buy individual photos from photopass, but if you plan to get a lot of photos...well, go ahead and find the price of an individual photo, and do your own math.

Can you still do that?

Yes. We were at Splash on Tuesday. They were set up to deliver pictures. So was Haunted Mansion. We did the online thing and the photos arrive while we're in line for the next ride

Individual photos cost about $14. It doesn't take many to make up the difference. I'm not sure if you can still get a printed picture at the end of a ride. I just use the photopass one.

Another question: can you still buy the printed-out ride photos, or do you have to have PP or MM or something in order to do that?

You can buy individual digital copies of photos, whether or not a ride photo. Not sure if they sell prints anymore. Ride photos can be put on photopass and when you get home decide which ones you want and the most economical option.

I am planning a trip in August. I have relatives that are linked to me from a previous trip two years ago that went in June of this year. I am still seeing their pictures. Is there any problem with me purchasing Memory Maker now or do I have to wait until their pictures expire or something like that so my 30 day window doesn't start based on their pictures?

In case it matters, I am not staying at a Disney resort so it isn't part of my package. Will be staying at SOG.

Ride photos can be put on photopass and when you get home decide which ones you want and the most economical option.

You don't put anything "on" PhotoPass - PhotoPass is the photo taking service. Ride photos are uploaded to your PhotoPass account, which is basically automatically created when you get your first PhotoPass picture taken.

In other words, you put the ride photo on your photopass account.

When you buy memory maker, it sits in your account inactivated until you go to download a picture from your account.

What others do in accounts linked to yours will have no effect on your account. So no issues buying memory maker whenever you want.

If you are staying at SOG, you may be able to purchase the Memory Maker for $84 until the end of Dec. The person (with certain military IDs) has to do it in person at SOG or any guest relations booth.
So check into that before you pay $169 (3 days before your first day of use) or $199 (anytime after that).

Crazyhare, based on your comments about certain types of ID being required I am betting that the discount is for active military, my sponsor is retired DoD so it probably doesn't apply. I will research it though. Thanks for the info.

Added, based on research it doesn't look like it would apply to my family. It primarily is only available to active or retired military or spouses of active military. No mention of the other categories that can stay at SOG, like civilian DoD.
