Photography Tips

On our last trip (as I mentioned above) I filled up my 512 3 times. Since we have a rental van, it's no problem to go offsite and download. I like to go to Sams Club (same place I have mine developed at home) and have the disc made. My second choice is Walmart, but the Kodak disc maker there lets you get a lot less pictures per disc. I've gotten as many as 400 pictures on the disc from Sams (even though they say it'll only hold 200) That means I only need 1 disc for my 512 card.

We had two minor problems doing this last trip, which is why I bought a 1GB and I'm bringing both. First small problem was this: First time we downloaded we did it at Walmart. It took quite awhile since they only had one machine. Also, due to smaller capacity, I had to do 2 discs. Also, the way they do it there is after you're all done you have to ask the employee for your blank discs-just a slight annoyance if they are busy.

The final small problem was that we filled our cards on the last day, before we were finished taking pix. So we jumped in the car again, went back to Walmart and did everything at the kiosk and then asked for the disc-then came the problem-the employee told us the CD burner was down! Couldn't do it at all. So we left Walmart, drove to Sam's about 5-10 min. further away, burned our discs (had to wait about 1 hr. or less) had some pizza, and we were on our way again.

I did the final download at home.

I understand your concern about the disc being corrupted. I've never had a bad disc myself, nor has any of my family but when we were doing the picture transfer at Sam's, my sister wanted to make doubly sure that her pictures had transferred to the disc before she erased the card. This was the first time she had done the direct cd burning without having them on her computer first. Everything was fine though, and I've never had a problem with it. My only concern is that when I transfer to the discs, the disc themselves can get ruined, or lost. But then, so can film. So, that's why I bought the new 1GB, and will bring both cards. I don't think I'll fill up both, but you never know. I plan on using the 512 first, then the 1GB. That way if I see that I'm getting close to filling up the second card, I can burn the first card to disc (it'll be the smaller of the two) and use the 512 as my third card.

Have fun and take alot of pictures!

My tip is ...

.. when taking pics of nearby people even outside during daytime, manually set your camera to use the flash. Any new-ish camera will meter the light and decide for you that you don't need the flash. However, flash during daytime (for anyone 10 feet away or closer) can fill in annoying shadows on faces, and make the pic (and the people in the pic!) much more attractive.

The flip-side of the flash coin is that it only works for things about 10 feet away or less. I always get a kick out of people sitting in a stadium taking pictures of the playing field or stage and using a flash to do so. You can manually shut off your flash, which will also extend the life of the flash by not using it unnecessarily.

I'm not a professional photographer or even an avid amateur, but I do so love to take pictures at Disney! So I've found lots of these posts very useful--thank you all! :goodvibes

Some other suggestions....

As other posters have suggested, don't be afraid to get close and vary your angles. I worry less about capturing all of one of the park's weenies--the castle, for instance--than in capturing the person. I try to include some architectural details in the shot but not at the expense of being able to recognize who I'm taking a picture of.

Focus on candid moments. I've got some great shots of people eating Dole Whip, crashed out on a bench, trying on Mickey ears, playing checkers. These remind me of the trip more than the Kodak picture spot shots.

When taking more formal shots, I choose to put people in locations where Disney's attention to detail will make the shot stand out. I have taken pictures featuring the MGM "Singin' in the Rain" umbrella, in front of the Muppets fountain, rocking at Aunt Polly's Landing, near Main Street's transportation, focusing on one section of AK's Tree of Life (with that person's favorite animal), etc. This also helps make the person the focus of your shot.

It's also very fun to take pictures with CMs....a nice treat for you and them!
