After 4 failed attempts at creating a European style piazza, Federation Square finally hit the right note for Melbourne.
I hadn't been to this part of the city for a while, so I was intrigued by the pyramid structure that was up. Sadly, it was raining quite hard at this stage, so I grabbed a picture with the
Outdoor Dining and will need to head back to check out the structure....
....I think I spot ladders in there...
Across the road from the square, I found another mosaic wall where I found
Insects, Mosaic...
....and a
Jazzy band of
Street Performers.
I made my way through the city, stopping by some of the
Historic shopping arcades, that is so much a part of this city.
The Block Arcade has been around in its current form since the 1890s. It used to be one of those things that was done by the genteel...to "Take a turn of the Block".
This is the
Entryway
The Block is classified by the National Trust of Australia. Much of the classification is based on the
Gorgeous floor....
...yes, more
Mosaic. And that monstrosity that blocks your view is advertising Tutankhamum's Exhibition in one of our musuems....it is stuck down by that
Yellow gaffer tape to the floor so I couldn't move it out of the way (I tried!). Would you believe that the pattern on the floor is known as
Jazz Moderne?
Continuing with our 'turn', we head towards the outdoor laneway of the Block. During the day, you can barely walk through as there are so many people partaking in
Outdoor Dining.
At this end and across the street from the Block, you will find another
historic arcade of Melbourne....the
Royal Arcade.
That clock, surrounded by the mythical Gog and Magog, has been chiming since 1892.
(The floor is terrazzo; not mosaic.)
I hope you enjoyed the 'turn'.
