Photo storage devices

I agree with almost everything that you've said... except that flash drives and memory cards are not magnetic. They're solid state, ie no moving parts, and are not affected by magnetic fields at all. They're not 100% but are probably going to last you longer than a hard drive will.

Wow, I thought they were magnetic. I know they don't move though which is one up on a hard drive or floppy. Good to know. I will stop yelling at DH for stacking the GBA games by his monitor then!!!!!

I hear you on the number of discs needed to back things up. I just made a "master" copy of my 2006 photos. It took 23 dvds. That was just my original files though, not any editied ones. Darn those RAW file sizes.

OK.. This whole thread got me on a quest to learn all about how flash memory works. Very interesting. Since it alters the electrons on the oxide layer I would think you would still want to be cautious around any electrical fields with it and also be cautious of static electricity.

Also learned it has a finite number of write/erase cycles. I had been told long ago (by someone far wiser than me) that it is better to reformat all at once rather than erase individual files. I guess this is why.

OK. I really have to find something else to do with my time!
