In my limited knowledge..

I was told early in my surveying career that when you focus past something and it disappears it is actualy the light waves bending around the object.

Otherwise it would still be there. Blurry but still there.

If anyone else has info otherwise, let me know if I am wrong.

Mikeeee

thanks for the enlightenment, I don't know why it works I just know that it works...LOL

both of these were taken thru glass - the first was through a plexiglass viewing window, the second was actual glass (thank God!! - HATE snakes!) in the Reptile House at the Cincinnati Zoo.

I have a Nikon Coolpix 4600. My son got it for me last fall and I have loved using it every chance I get. My last upload to my computer put me into the 6000's. I love photography....but I am clueless unless it's a point and shoot. However, since getting this camera I am learning a few things.

On this issue of 'putting the lens to the glass'...do you shut off the flash? Do you leave the camera in standard point and shoot mode? I am heading to SW Orlando with my DS (well...he's 24...not so dependent...lol) this weekend and we are really looking forward to the glass viewing areas.

I second this ?? I just got my Rebel XT in the mail today!! :cheer2: I am so stoked!! Anyway, I am hoping to get in a quick day trip to Sea World with my boys next week, and would love to take some pics with my new camera while we are there. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Just be careful when putting a camera up to the glass, I did that once and forgot that the lens moves slightly to focus... jammed the lens and that camera was a write off!!

This was our first outing with our Kodak C340 so many of our pics were auto. IIRC I simply turned the flash off to take these at Living Seas. I may have even tried resting the camera's side against the aquarium for steadiness as it was barrel shaped, or I set the camera to the Night Time setting. The picture's proprties don't go in to that much detail. It was more luck than anything else. I think it's fortunate that this particular tank is very brightly lit.

The details from the photo of Gill are:
Shutter 1/20 sec
Normal Exposure
Flash did not fire
aperature: f2.70
focal length 34.00mm
ISO 160

The details from the photo of the Clown fish are:
Shutter 1/15 sec
Normal Exposure
Flash did not fire
aperature: f3.40
focal length 53.00mm
ISO 160

I have read that people bring windex wipes to clean a spot on the glass to shoot through.

Mikeeee

I never would have thought to do that!
Great pix, by the way!

Here's my "through the dirty aquarium glass" photo. Even the water was dirty!

These two were taken with my old Olympus C-2100UZ. First, zoomed in:

and now zoomed out - you can see the fence

Last week a friend and I visited Australia Zoo - I am lucky enough to live about an hour away. As I know los of you are fans I thought you might like to see some first hand photos! Please excuse the quality - I am new to digital photography and am still learning. My camera is a "cheapie" to do just that! (And I have to do something to fill in all the time before I go to WDW!!!)

2 of the 3 elephants - their enclosure is being remodelled so they look like they are out in the open all the time. They sleep elsewhere, apparently!

Wow, great pictures!! Thanks for sharing and you might want to attach this link on some of the other boards (budget, community, etc). There are a lot of Steve Irwin fans on the DISboards that I know would love to see these pictures. :)

Thanks wdwmom2 and Jeanne B for your comments. I will try to put this on the other boards - not quite sure how, but will investigate!!
