Since I don't think the D90 has ISO 100, I wonder if this might have been a good time for that ND filter. I would imagine you could get a bit sharper shot if taken a stop or two lower than F/20 and still have the same exposure time.

Cool angle though...need 1 more mm to get the "Partners" statue in a bit farther.

The D90 has ISO 100 if you lower the ISO. There are 2 settings below ISO 200 and the lowest is ISO100.

ISO 100 on the D90 is software-based.

So similar to some of the higher ISOs on some cameras except the camera is reducing the exposure in post? Wouldn't that reduce dynamic range?

I'd like to see a before/after with and without ND filter. Would be really interesting!

Yes, the D90 also operates the same way at ISO 6400. In all honesty, I'm not quite certain whether going to ISO 100 would've been better (sacrificing some dynamic range) and using a lower aperture to avoid defraction. I don't know.

It is a real shame Nikon chose to get lower ISO that way (and most Canons give us no options for lower ISO at all). There are amplifiers in the signal path and they can be set up for a gain of less than 1, giving lower effective ISO without a loss of dynamic range.

My Canon G11 has a built-in 3 stop ND filter that I am guessing is an amplification of 1/8 and not a real physical filter at all. It sure would be nice if my dSLR had such a thing, with ISO down to 1. It sure would cut into the filter maker's profits too! ;)
***I stand (sit) corrected, the G11 actually has a physical filter that slides into the light path!

I don’t have any idea about technical facts when it comes to taking pictures; I only have a simple Kodak easy share and a simple tripod and so my night shots are not that good (but most of them are enough for me and I like them) but maybe that is why I loooove your night shoot pictures so much.

My favorite is still the Epcot Monorail picture but this here is also out of this world.

Thank you so much. :thumbsup2

I have posted this previously. This was taken last Summer with a 10.5.

This was hand held.

I took over 130 shots of the Wishes show alone whiloe there Apr 11-16

A lot look the same due to shooting in burst mode.

Here are a few that I really like:

On number 4 you should try to merge the original image with that one so that you get the castle and foreground looking normal but the sky like that.

You might try a tripod and slower shutter speeds next time so you can get the castle exposed better.

Not sure what you mean by the castle exposed better?

The last few, the lights were off on the castle, and the first I was trying to get the burst of fireworks.

How could you ever get a full sized tripod anywhere near the castle and not be in the way?

You will get better results with fireworks when you use a longer shutter speed, like 2 seconds or more. I am not saying that your shots are bad, but you capture a quick moment in time with your fast shutter speeds. With a long shutter speed you get the nice long trails and the things that are sort of dark (i.e. castle) are given more time to expose. You should also reduce the ISO to one of the lowest settings. Even with the lights low/off on the castle, you can still get it brighter than a silhouette with a longer exposure.

Many people get their tripods set up for the fireworks. It is best to try to scope out a spot early though. If you do not want to carry it around all day, you can get a locker.

Ukcatfan, I cant wait to try out these tips for whenever there are fireworks! Guess that wont be until May Two Four, my DW will be waiting for me to make a mistake so that she can quote you! lol.

I did not have a tripod with me, so I had to handhold. I shot a bunch with iso 100, and was shooting at a 1/20 and it was too slow for the handholding. Even at 1600, I was getting 1/60-1/80, so it was just on the cusp of being able to hand hold for me and get sharp images.

Thanks for your input. IT was very valuable!!!!
