Mike, I'm with you. I have a tough time with dark rides also. On our next trip I'll attempt some more. On the first two, you could have dropped the ISO so you wouldn't have blown the highlights and would have had less noise. Overall, you did a good job. Did you use AF and did you have any problems getting focus?

Yeah I need to work on not only the dark ride photography but also just night photography in general and also fireworks. I believe I had it on autofocus, I must have since I usually have one I my daughters in one arm while my wife has the other lol. I think I was trying to keep the ISO as low as possible to keep the noise down as much as possible. One thing I don't like about my camera is as soon as I get around 800 ISO the noise picks up a lot. I've seen some other cameras handle that a lot better and makes just aggrevates me with that limitation on mine lol.

Mike, I feel the same way about noise. I shoot RAW, and with the Nex 7 I notice it at 800 and pretty bad at 3200. In real world shooting I don't find it that much worse than my D5100 was. I think that would be my only reason to ever go FF. But ya know, I don't use 3200 that often. I think the Nex 5n handles noise really well and the Nex 6 is supposed to have a new 16mp sensor to handle noise even better. With the Nex 7 you have to compromise noise for the 24mp.

I am going to try some dark rides on my next trip...I can't wait to try it out with the A57. I haven't had a chance to download my pictures from the last month (went to some baseball games and a NASCAR race). I hope to get them downloaded this week and post some.

I don't normally post pictures I take on dark rides cause quiet frankly they usually suck but figured I put some up to show you how the A55 handles low light and high ISO situations :crazy2:

Thanks for posting these. I am heading to the world in Sept and want to try some ride pics with my A55 as well. Your pics give me an idea of what to look forward to. I check your pic specs and it looks like you have a steady hand using a shutter speed of 1/25 & 1/30. I am pretty steady but not sure on a moving vehicle.

So what mode did you decide on. Did you go manual or use shutter, aperature etc?

I do like the noise on the HM pics, it actually adds something. Gives a more HM feel.

Thanks Mike! I was playing around with a Rayox 250 macro lens adapter.

Not a problem. Having others post pics and see how they handle certain situations is a great tool and has helped me out a ton also. Shooting dark rides is a huge challenge and does take some practice and patience and you will have a lot more come out bad than good but that is the best way to learn.

As far as settings I believe I shot them all on manual using my Sony 35mm f/1.8 lens. I also had it on auto focus and found the camera fought to focus during some of the really darker parts of the rides. I did however do a little bit of processing using Lightroom and Nik Color Efex to help me better these pics.

Here are a few more dark ride shots I took that came out ok.

I usually do pretty decent on this ride, all the bright colors help out a lot while trying to take pictures.

That came out really well.

So I discovered I have a nice little piece of dust on my sensor :sad2: I ordered a small rocket air blower the other day and will be here today, so hopefully I can knock it out of there. I didn't run the in camera sensor cleaner yet, I wanted to try blowing it out first before that.

Mike, those shots are awesome. I especially like the HM shot.:thumbsup2

Ya know it's funny, with the exposed sensor on the Nex, I get a lot less dust than when I had on the D5100 with a mirror. I actually wet cleaned the D5100 twice.

Cool Hamilton! I need to shoot more in AK. It's one of our few hours parks.
