Photo sharing: Sony Alpha

This was all started by another thread asking who uses third-party lenses. Well that made me dig the "Old Dog" out of the closet along with the 50mm 1.7 and "Beercan" 70-210. Here's the Alpha 100, jpeg straight from the camera.... with the 70-210.

I took this picture yesterday before the lens was broken.

Suggestions for a replacement??

What happened to your Minolta 100mm? :(

How much are you wanting to spend to replace? The Tamron 90mm Macro is highly regarded, it's currently $460 and has a $60 mail in rebate. Sigma makes 3 good options for 1:1 Macro... 50mm $300, 105mm $480, and 70mm $500. Sony makes updated versions of the Minolta 50mm and 100mm.. $480 and $680. All prices are from B&H.

Why not just buy another one on Ebay, theres a huge assortment of Minolta lenses there. I just bought and received my 70-210 f4 beercan lens last week. Absolutely love it.... I'm sure you'll find a replacement there.

Suggestions for a replacement??

I purchased the Tamron 90mm macro after reading many good reviews on it and have been happy with the quality of the lens. Every now and then KEH.com has a Minolta 100mm macro if you wanted to stick with it.

Is there no hope of repair on your lens?

Oh, your poor Sony - called an old dog when it takes such nice pics! I think it's trying to tell you something. ;)

Thank you for your suggestions. I absolutely love the optics on that lens; so I think that I'll buy another 100mm (either used Minolta) or the new Sony lens. Although that lens is really expensive!!

I thought that I'd share some of my other pictures from our trip to Mackinac Island last weekend.

Any feedback is appreciated. I still have a lot to learn.

It's telling me it wants to go to Disney!!! Honestly, I'm torn between two systems.

I don't know how you do it - I'd want to take both with me! But at least it's nice to have choices! :goodvibes

Any feedback is appreciated. I still have a lot to learn.

I really like the timing of #2, and #5 is my favorite - the focus on the butterfly is spot on. :thumbsup2 I haven't been able to find one that will sit down for me to take it's picture!

I wonder how #4 would be converted to B/W? IMO the blue of the water and sky overwhelms the bridge and made me wonder about it were in black and white.

Thanks for sharing! It's been approx 20 years since I've visited Mackinac Island.

Kathy,
Thank you for your comments and I agree with your assessment. I used Adobe and played around with the picture of the bridge and this is what came up with:

I like the bw contrast. Your suggestion was very good.

Here's another one with Shepler's roaster tail (one of the ferry boat companies that take you to the Island).

Here, I've tried to normalize the color.

Here, I've played with the color and I'm not sure if I like this or not??

Also, I did win a 100mm Minolta macro lens on eBay today Ex+ quality for $455. I am excited to have this lens in my collection again. I also appreciated the information from all of you that replied to my note. I have had fun looking through the seller inventory for the used Minolta lenses.

Quick question about Minolta lenses that fit Sony Alphas. Can you use any lens that was made for a Minolta AF? Or is there something more that I need to know when looking on Ebay at lenses? Thanks!

Any SLR Minolta AF lenses will work fine. You may sometimes see the odd 'Vectis' lens here or there - they're pretty rare but they're out there - those lenses will NOT work with the Sonys. But any Maxxum AF lens, commonly known as A-Mount, is the same mount Alpha uses.

Do the other brands that were originally made for Minolta work with the Sony's or do I need to look for the Minolta brand only? Also when it is the Minolta brand does it have to be Maxxum, or can it be just an AF Minolta? Sorry for all the questions, but if I don't ask, I will not know. Thanks!

Yes, any of the brands that were made for the Minolta AF camera's will work on the Sony A mount. I do remember reading something about early Sigma's that may need to be re-chipped but don't recall if it was something about metering or focus. I believe they originally reverse engineered and didn't get quite get the full compatability. Later they licensed with Minolta or Sony so more recent models are fully functional. Hopefully someone else knows more specifics about this.

And not all of Minolta's AF lenses have Maxxum on them but they are the same mount. You just need to make certain they are AF lenses and not MD's (manual) and they will work on the Sony's.

I like the B/W conversion and the greater contrast - nice! On the one's you worked with color I think I prefer the normalized more - again b/c of the increased contrast between sky and water it provides over the original.

Congrats on picking up a new macro lens!

And not Vectis! :)

:rotfl: Nope - not Vectis! I don't believe that I've ever seen one but now I know to leave it sit if I ever do!

My 100mm macro arrived this weekend. I took some pictures to test the performance of this lens. I love the close up pictures that you can achieve with this lens.
