Ok, so my photos are certainly not as good as I've seen on here, but I'm working on it

Thanks, I'm glad you like it.

Now, for something completely different...

Getting High in Las Vegas by wbeem, on Flickr

Were you able to take a tripod up with you? I had my gorillapod and saw the sign for no tripods allowed so took it back to my car because I didn't want to have to make the walk twice as I was running late for a dinner and have trouble walking. I was pretty disappointed that I didn't have it with me as my pictures didn't turn out as well as I had hoped.

Nope, no tripod. The guy in front of me had a tiny table-stop tripod and they told him he couldn't take it up there.

Instead, I brought a Manfrotto Magic Arm & Super Clamp. That really threw the security guard for a loop. She started to tell me "No tripods", but I told her it wasn't a tripod. Eventually, she got on the phone with a supervisor and I also spoke with him to explain it. They let me take it up there. The same thing happened at the National Air & Space Museum last week. They don't allow tripods or monopods, either. I had to go through the same thing, get another supervisor to evaluate it, but they eventually approved it.

All I can say is that a good attitude really helps, because it's very easy for them to say "No" just if you give them any negativity. So, stay happy.

If you take the magic arm up to the Strat, I'll also warn you that high winds can cause movement, so it isn't as stable as a tripod. You have have to block the wind with your body, or use your hands to minimize the vibration.

none of mine have that wow, or pop quality.

I seem to miss something all the time.

Pick a photo of yours that didn't turn out the way you experienced the scene and start a new critique thread. You'll get folks make suggestions on what they would have done differently, which in turn gives you ideas for your next opportunity.

If you don't want to put yourself out there for a critique, just look at your photo and ask yourself what you don't like about it, and what you could do different the next time.
