I need help viewing all you lovely photographs. Can anyone help me with this problem? I can see some photos, but others are just the little box with the red X. Is there anything I can or should do to be able to solve this problem?

A red "X" means two things:

1) You're using Internet Explorer
2) The image cannot be loaded. This is generally not your fault but the fault of wherever the image in question is stored.

I believe that you can right-click the red X and go into Properties to see the exact URL of the image, you can try copy-and-pasting that into your address bar. That will help occasionally, when a site won't allow hot-linking of the image but will let you view it directly. You might even be able to view it directly when right-clicking, but I don't think so. I don't use Internet Explorer so I can't remember its behavior with red X's exactly off the top of my head.

Generally, though, if there is a problem like that, it's quickly noted. If you're getting a lot of them, then perhaps there's a problem on your end. A dial-up internet connection might possibly cause an issue, too; possibly there could be a timeout hit? Unlikely but possible.

Actually, try this first. Hit F5 or click the reload/refresh button in the toolbar. This will reload the page and it will try again to load the images that aren't coming up. If more appear, then it's some kind of internet connectivity problem, perhaps caused by your internet provider.

I have found some of the dial up "accelerators" will cause extremely compressed and sometimes missing images. If you are using dial-up you might try turning any accelerators off and see if that changes it too.

Thanks for the suggestions, but so far though no luck. I don't have a dial up connection, I have cable. It's strange because on a thread like the one about show pictures of where you live, some pictures come up, some don't. It's also frustrating. I asked on the technical board but still haven't received a reply.

Check Bill's thoughts from yesterday on the Tech board......

Try some of the links in my signature....try the resort one, it has a LOT of images. Sometimes I need to do a refresh of an image intense load too. All those photos work. If you see some and not others, try the refresh, see if that loads additional ones. Let us know what happens there.

I've tried all the suggestions, the only one I'm not sure about is the links thing. What does that mean? Refresh doesn't work. I really need to grab my son, hopefully tonight to see if he can figure the problem out. I'm just not knowledgeable enough about computers.

I am lost, crazyme5kids. The strange thing is some work, and the others do not come around with a refresh. If it was none, it would most likely be a setting on your PC.

Do you have a firewall, that maybe is blocking certain sites and not others?

So hitting Refresh leaves exactly the same photos with a red "X"?

Try holding down Shift when hitting refresh, that should force a complete reload of the page...

If that still doesn't work, you'll have to look at the properties of the images that won't load and see if you can find a commonality. For example, maybe SmugMug photos are loading but Photobucket photos aren't...

I agree with this. When I used to use ZoneAlarm's firewall, some photo sites had to be manually added to my safe list. ( After checking properties I found that I always had trouble with photos posted from Pbase.) It could be a firewall or some other filter you might have (like if you use a provider safety net or child's filter that might block unknown images).

I am pretty strongly anti-software firewalls - they almost always cause more problems than they cure. I do highly recommend a little cable router, though, which should effectively shield your PC from the wild, wooly internet getting in without your approval.

If the OP has a firewall loaded, I'd recommend temporarily disabling it, if that fixes the problem, change the settings or better yet, get rid of it entirely.
