Photo editing help please

I am very new to the photo editing realm. Can someone please explain how I can change a photo to black and white, but have an object in the photo remain original color? I can take RAW photos and use Photoshop Elements 5 for my editing. Do you use the lasso tool? Thanks in advance to all!

I use PaintShop Pro 7...

pull up the photo you want
change it to grey scale
select all
copy the photo
undo the grey scale(click on the undo arrow twice)
right click on phtot and Paste as New Layer
the erase the black and white from the parts that you want as color

when done you need to go to the layers tab on top and merge...merge all flatten

Many many ways to do this.

An ez method for photoshop.

Open image
duplicate layer
turn saturation down to 0% on top layer
erase top layer where you would like color from bottom layer to show through.

Do you use the lasso tool?

I used to, but now I just zoom in on the picture change the eraser size as needed.

I Photoshop.... instead of just erasing on the top layer, use a layer mask. Then you can easily correct your mistakes instead of having to hit undo all the time. Just use the x key to switch form black to white.

Sounds like Photoshop might be easier than Paint Shop Pro....less steps.

Thanks for the compliment. I like the shot because my W was just going to get the normal "stand there and smile picture" but there was loud music in the background and Goofy started to dance with her. I thought it was a special moment and wanted it to stand out.

Another thing to do to make a more "blended" effect is to change the opacity of the duplicate layer containing the color. By decreasing the opacity of that layer you control how stark the color is against the black and white. This is especially helpful if you are trying to colorize small pieces of a photo for a more subtle effect.

I use the magic wand selection tool to get the rough cut of what I'm selecting and the do the finer work with lasso.

Now if you had some money to spend you could get Photoshop CS3 and use the pretty nifty quick selection and refine tools

In Photoshop just:
Open the Image
Go to Image>Adjustment> desturate
Use the History brush to paint back in color.
