Photo Backpack?

I have the Kata 467 Digital Rucksack and it has a lot of room for camera storage in the bottom and large open space at the top plus a laptop compartment.

I have this backpack as well and love it. I can get my Rebel XT and my 40D, the 18-55 kit the 24-135 kit, the 50mm 1.8 and a Sigma 70-300 in the camera portion. I put the flash in the upper compartment. It also comes with a rain cover. There are plenty of compartments on top for memory cards, batteries, etc. I got the black/green model and picked up a couple of lime green mickey zipper pulls for it last fall and they match perfectly.

The one thing I would caution though is that when you get a laptop in there with all the photo equipment it's heavy.

I have the Kata 465 Digital Rucksack (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/561682-REG/Kata_KT_DR_465_BR_DR_465_Digital_Rucksack_Black.html), which I believe is essentially the same as the one mentioned above but without the laptop compartment.

It's a great bag. I can carry my D300 with lens attached plus at least two other lenses (depending on their size) and the SB-600 in the bottom compartment. There are pockets for memory cards, filters, etc. in the front and a large compartment at the top for the rest of my stuff. It's also very comfortable to carry. At first I thought the yellow liner was kind of silly looking, but it really makes it easier to find things like lens caps that I toss in there. In fact, when I was bag shopping I saw this one on line and pretty much ruled it out, but when I saw it in the store I changed my mind. Looks like B&H has a $10 rebate on it right now and is offering it with a monopod. I'd kind of like to order the pink or yellow one, but then I'll never get dh to carry my bag again.

Thank you everyone for your input .. I have been following all the links everyone has posted and so far I am leaning towards the Kata DR465. I rarely pack my laptop so I dont know that I would need that extra pocket in the back offered on the 467. I like the Tamrac version too so Im not quite sure yet which one I will choose.

there is a rolling backpack on ebay for 39 dollars that is identical to the one I used for a year or 2 before my gear outgrew it

I just recently bought the Think Tank Rotation 360 and it is a great bag. Very well constructed and has just a ton of features. The bottom part is a belt pack which rotates in and out of the backpack which makes it quick to access lenses and flash. They have a whole site dedicated to the bag it's at www.rotation360.com. The best part is that it comes with a camera strap which attatches to the backpack straps so that your neck isn't sore after a long day of shooting while in the parks.

I am just starting the process of looking for a not to expensive backpack to use occasionally when traveling that could hold:
-Dell 15.4" laptop
-Nikon D40 (18-135mm lens attached)
-Small P&S camera
-MiniDV Camcorder
-batteries/chargers/cards.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Take a look in this thread. Some very good suggestions were made for me to check out when I asked about a new backpack to accomodate my D300, three lenses and flash plus the other misc items. Some of those suggested have the laptop pocket in the back. I think you might want to take a look at the Kata DR467.

I dont know about the camcorders and the digi cams, but I got this bag for my laptop and basic travels, and I LOVE this thing.

Dont know any places that sell it, it was a gift from the boss, but it is awesome, all the little hidden compartments for the ipod, and other stuff. :)

Kata makes some really great backpacks that are quite comfortable. Personally, I have one of the 3N1 packs. Others here like one of the rucksacks - can't remember the exact number 467 or 465 maybe. The 3N1 30 fits my 70-200 2.8 lens attached to my camera. It also has a nice size storage area.

I don't suppose you would have a picture of the storage area up top, would you? I've just checked this bag out on Amazon and B & H, and I really like it! I have a Tamrac Adventure (#?) that I love, but this one would hold more, and I could access the camera if I wore it sling style, so I'm considering it, but I need plenty of storate up top since we use this for the Disney trips.

I can take a picture for you later today. You can easily access your gear wearing the bag either sling style or backpack style. Personally, I prefer to wear it backpack style. I just slip off one strap and swing the bag around. I used this bag on our last trip to Disney and really like it - I've been to Disney four times with a DSLR. Every trip I've tried a different bag. This one is by far the best.

I have the lowepro computreker plus because I have a larger laptop.

It is easy to pack and admittedly heavy if full but I like it. The bag is not heavy but with a D300, 50mm, 18-200, 70-200, 60 mm macro and sb800 and 17 in mac with batteries card, wolverine, ipod, headphones, etc. It adds up to some weight. It does distribute the weight well.

Here are a couple pictures - not great ones, but pictures nevertheless

this is the front of the bag with the tripod holder attached. I believe all the new ones come with the tripod holder. Mine didn't, but I added it on.

That is a big help. Thanks! It looks roomy enough for our needs, I think. I should compare dimensions with our current bag though. DH may have a coronary if its too much bigger than the one we already own. He carries it quite a bit of the time while I carry the camera around my neck. I love the option to carry it like a sling pack, the waterproof cover, the optional trolley, and the ability to fit my 5D with my 70-200mm lens mounted in the bag!

This is the one that we have, and I wore it for 7 days in June. We only a D60 plus lens kit (no flash) and a small HDD camcorder. I like the top cargo part for maps and such. But in all fairness, I did wear the camera almost all the time around my neck. But, for day to day use here at the house, this back pack is great and protects gear.

Your DH will easily be able to carry it. It isn't that big. Although it does carry a lot of gear. Here is a photo of me with it on - you can't really even see it. But that's kind of my point - I carried it all week at Disney and was fine.

I did look at the Lowepro fastpack a pp mentioned. When I tried it, the part against my back felt very rigid. The Kata just fit me better. With the Kata you can fit lenses in any of the three slots. With the Lowepro, the slot closet to the top storage area could only fit a small flash or filters. I have my bag set up so that my three lenses are in each of the three slots. And my camera will fit in any of the three slots depending on whichever lens I have attached. I always store my 70-200 in the middle slot. And if that lens is attached to my camera, the camera fits in that slot. I store my 18-200 in the bottom slot. If that lens is attached to my camera, my camera fits in that slot - you get the idea.

Here is what I carried every day on our last trip - camera, 70-200 lens, 18-200 lens, 28-75 lens, 30mm prime lens and speed light in the lower area. I carried filters, memory cards, flash diffuser, my purse, snacks, water, and whatever else in the top area.

I use a Kata R-103 and have been quite happy with it. It holds my 15" laptop, dslr, HDD video, p&s, spare lens and speedlight. It is well padded and will fit in airline overhead or under seat.

I am considering this bag and wanted feedback from anyone
who may have one here. I did read a couple old threads here
where they were mentioned. I can not find any locally
to go and see in person. My friend has the slingbag and I also saw
the fastpack and tried it on. I found it to be comfortable but didn't
care for it's size and style for storage. Is the Micro Trekker backpack
straps padded like their othe bags and comfortable. There are times when I will probable carry it just slung over one shoulder. Is this possible with how the straps are designed. I would appreciate any and all imput you have. I still
haven't decided if I will go with the 100 or 200 yet.

i just purchased the sling yesterday. I have a nikon d60 an a 55-200 lens, flash and two batteries. The bag holds everything nicely. I like the fact that you can get to the camera and the lens from the side.

the Side opens half way for easy use. It also opens all the way so you can reload the equipment if needed.

We purchased the camera and bag to take to Alaska in June.

I like the fact that the bag can be a sling or cross over your chest. It has room for extras. The bag has a dust and water hood that hides in the back of the pack.

Its lite and comfortable to take.
