Photo Assignment October '07: Depth of Field

Actually these were under an awning, so it was a little darker under there, but when I lowered my Aperature, it got really dark. Next time should I keep my Aperature higher and not worry about the effect that I am trying to get?

Jan1033 - I will post a pic of what come up when I click on Image information. I really don't know what a lot of it means. Can you tell me which one is the Aperature that I used?

No you want to keep the apetature as you want it to be, but lower the ISO so your not shooting high ISO on a bright day. The shutter speed will go up to accomidate this.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I am going to go outside today and try some more, hopefully I can figure this out. :goodvibes

I'll throw another shallow DOF pic in here from today.

I have struggled to understand DOF over the last year or so, especially with my D200. I like using a shallow DOF to make something pop in the picture. Here are a few from my most recent trip.

I've been traveling on business a lot lately, but finally found some time to do some touristy stuff around San Francisco this past weekend. As I was walking around, I remembered this assignment and shot a few things with DOF in mind. Here's a couple of quick shots from the Fisherman's Wharf area.......

wdwmom2: wow! How did you get so close to that deer? Did he sneak up on you, or what?

We were staying at Canaan Valley resort last week and the deer are very friendly. Some of them would actually walk right up to our hotel room door!

DH took this pic, he is camera challenged:rotfl2: . I am sitting on the walk outside the hotel room.

I shot this a week or so ago with my old Sony Cybershot at work. It was in a series of 6 for some ads. I had the camera set to auto.

WOW

There are some GREAT pictures for this months assignment. There are really to many to highlight.

Awesome, awesome job everyone. We certainly have a lot of talented people that frequent this board.

Keep up the great work everyone.

As shallow as I could get with the lens I had.

Here's something a little different, I shot both of these with the same settings only different focal points. The first shot I focus in the middle of the field giving me OF in front and behaind the focus point, the second shot I focus in the front of the field, giving me the front of the field in focus and behind the focus point out of focus .

Canon 40d, elevated metering mode, 300mm f/4 lens, ISO 100, 1/400s, f/5.6, AWB, aperture priority

Wow! Glad I found this thread. We just got a Canon S5 and this is what I've had the most fun with. I'm slowly learning.....

I wish the blue of the juniper berries was a little brighter. Maybe if I'd fiddled w/the white balance???
