We literally have a zoo now I think. This makes the fourth cat (first female though) and we also have a dog, a rabbit, and a snake.

What a beautiful kitten, Kevin. I love her colors and the colors in the picture. I think she's a "money cat", isn't she? Maybe she'll bring you luck! :shamrock:

Thank you. The background colors are actually a Mickey Mouse pillowcase! It just shows how a shallow DOF can turn a distracting background into an interesting one.

Here is another thing that shallow DOF will let you do. This was shot though a chain link fence at f/2.8. It makes the subject a little softer, but you can not see the fence I was shooting through.

What an excellent shot. The shallow DOF also give movement to the ball to show action...Excellent.

Here are a couple I found. I am planning on taking a photography practice trip to the local zoo tomorrow, so maybe I will have some more this weekend to share

I love to take pictures even though I'm not good at it and my camera isn't the greatest, but I got this by accident and I don't know how. Can someone explain to me how to do this every time I want to. I have gotten a new camera since then, but it's not super awesome like most of you have, but I can set ISO and exposure times on my new one and a few other settings I'm not sure of. If I could get my pics even just a tiny bit better I would be thrilled. Thanks.

As an excuse to have dim sum for lunch, I went to the Winnipeg Chinese Cultural Centre to take a few pictures in the gardens for the DOF assignment. Its a cloudy day today and I shot all of these at 200 ISO.

In this shot I wanted a shallow depth of field with blurring in both the foreground and the background.

Focal length: 70.0mm
Exposure time: 0.0050 s (1/200)
Aperture: f/4.5
ISO equiv.: 200
Whitebalance: Manual
Exposure: aperture priority (semi-auto)

Another shallow DOF with blurring in background

Exposure time: 0.0020 s (1/500)
Aperture: f/4.5

Exposure: aperture priority (semi-auto)

Finally, a deep field with everything in focus throughout

Focal length: 17.0mm
Exposure time: 0.0012 s (1/800)
Aperture: f/3.5

I try to get about 5 ft from the fence, and put the focus point on the very center, so if I move, sometimes it will focus on the fence, and I have to move around a bit. I usually do this in av mode.

I am really not familiar enough with the sX line to say more, I have only played around with an S3 for about 30 minutes one time.

Thank you for the tips! Perhaps I was to far away from the fence with my attempts. I'll have to try next spring, again! Got any good basketball tips? That's next up on the agenda - followed by the gymnastic competition season!!!

the thing I always had the most trouble with in Basket ball was White balance, most gyms have terrible lights, everything comes out with a really yellowish hugh, so set a good custom WB to start with.

other than that, make sure you shutter speed stays fast enought to freeze the action.

I went to a local metro park yesterday with my son's fifth grade class on a field trip. I got there 45 minutes early, as I knew this would be a good place to practice this assignment. Here are 4 of my photos. The first 2 are studies of deep depth of field and the 2nd are shallow.

I took this during our stay in Boston last weekend. It looks like a statue but the guy was real, it was pretty amazing to watch him move.
