Photo Assignment November '06: Low Light/Nighttime

Can anyone explain to me what ISO means? I've got a Sony DSC-P93 and whenever I have it on the nightime setting and automatic ISO it generally uses ISO 100. I'm not sure if I can change the ISO setting in this mode but I know that I can in the manual mode but I cannot set the OEV. Whenever I slow down my shutter speed it automatically reduces the OEV to around -2.0. Does this sound normal?

ISO is the standard used to represent film speed, ie: ISO 100, ISO 200, ISO 400, ISO 800, ISO 1600.

Generally with digital camera's when you use AUTO setting or any of the preset options (the ones with the little icon's, ie: Portrait, Landscape, Sports, etc...) ISO is automatically set by the camera based on information that is in the camera's processor. Some camera's have the option to turn off automatic ISO, but not many.

If you want to have control of your own settings or at least just ISO there should be a Program mode or 'P'. This mode will allow you to change ISO, but the camera will choose the appropriate shutter and aperture.

I don't know the inner workings of your camera, but if it is changing the OEV then the camera itself is trying to compensate for the exposure it thinks it is seeing. If your in manual you should be able to change the OEV, at least I would think so. Otherwise it really wouldn't be fully automatic if the camera is making that compensation.

Be kind, I'm on a learning curve. :teeth:

No, seriously, thanks for the tips in the first post. I realized when reading my owner's manual last night there were things I could have done to improve my camera's performance on our trip last month which was the first time using it at WDW.

Here are a few I took, no tripod, auto setting (had to get to dinner, family rushing me LOL). Sunset photo taken from moving monorail; Space Mountain photo, not great, but something about it I really liked (I was walking and floor was moving also). Last picture taken near home using tripod on top of my car.

Here is one from the Disney Wonder show The Golden Mickey's from the Lion King section of the show. This was taken without a flash just using the theatre lighting. In Sport mode.

Just a reminder: got this camera about a month ago, moving up from a point and shoot Kodak, so I'm on a steep learning curve.

Oh, and Noiseware is my new best friend. :teeth:

Anu suggestions/critiques greatly appreciated!

A few night shots- in our room at POFQ a few weeks back. This is what a full day at Disney does to kids- all the best. :cloud9:

I had the good fortune to spend most of last week in Paris (and the bad fortune to spend 3 days trying to get home due to flight cancellations). Lots of low light pics--haven't had time to go through all of them yet, but here are a few. Some are rather noisy as I had to boost the ISO quite a bit because I'm too lazy to lug a tripod around all day.

The Eiffel Tower looks absolutely amazing lit up at night.

Thanks!

I highly recommend it--what a beautiful city! And I'm choking on the stuff that passes for coffee around here after being spoiled by all those wonderful cafes. ;)

A perfect assignment for me! Luckily I'll be back with "new" (well new to me) WDW photos before the end of Nov. Will be sure to take some with this in mind (besides the blurry no-flash fireworks ones!).

I know what you mean! Although I've never been to France, I do roast and grind my own coffee. Much Better!! :thumbsup2

In fact, it's a wonder to me that WDW has such terrible coffee. Nestcafe??????? :rolleyes1

OK, fill me in - we LOVE coffee, have been to Paris, own a fancy espresso machine, etc. But don't roast our own. I want to do that! Where do you buy the beans? How do you roast them?

It's the BEST!!! I love the Tanzanian bean, roasted to a full city roast.

Check out Sweet Maria's they've got a great website with tons of information. Their small roasters a pretty good.

Depends on where you live, but I can get the green beans in our city for $3 a pound which makes the process very cost effective, even considering buying the roaster and a decent grinder.

thank you! thank you! A coffer roaster will be such a great Christmas gift for my husband! He is so hard to buy for, but I know he will love this. I live in a small mid-western town, so I doubt I can buy beans locally, but I'll do a little research.

I've just got back from an 18 day trip to WDW and I took a couple of opportunities to do some nightime shooting. I haven't had time to review all the photos I took yet but I came across this one and I thought it fitted the bill pretty well :)
