Going to POP in early December.
How far in advance do you suggest I call in to try and request a room (actually 2 connecting rooms) in a certain location within the complex (2 ,3 days)?
Should I mention that I will be arriving late (about 10-30pm)so that they don't give away my requested rooms ?

 Calls do not go directly to the resort, but a call center. If a guest has a special reason (we have medical) the operator can put a guest through to the front desk; Otherwise they now take the request.

Be sure it is on your reservation now :) Rooms can be changed unless blocked by a supervisor for a medical reason, so there is no way to be sure untill you arrive at the resort and check-in. If you have more young children than adults, which requires a connecting room, they will be sure that request is met.

Remember, the more flexible you are about location, the better chance you'll have with connecting rooms. December is a VERY busy time at POP. If connecting rooms is the most important, be sure to make that the first request of up to three. If you decide to call, I would call 4 days ahead of arrival, but no way to be sure about your room location and connecting rooms until check-in.

Hope everything works out and you have a great trip!

Call reservations and have your requests added now. Disney will not guarantee connecting rooms but they will try.

Actually I should have clarrified. We are actually arriving on the 13th (after the Pop Warner crowd leave). I seem to remember seeing somewhere that its better to fax in your room request.Anyone heard that ?
Anyone see any potential problem with the late check in?(getting our requested connecting rooms)

The only way to guarantee that the room assigner will see your request is to call CRO.

Calling the resort gets you connected to a call center, not the resort itself.

Some room assigners look at faxes. But you're trusting that a piece of paper will get matched up with your reservation in the computer. I'd be afraid that it'd get misplaced, used for scratch paper, or eaten by the fax machine.

If you call CRO, it's right there when the room assigner pulls up your reservation on the computer.

And please remember that connecting rooms are not guaranteed. If only four sets of connecting rooms are unoccupied the day you check in, and six famillies have requested them, the first four families to check in will get them, and the other two won't. Even having small children won't help, so long as there are two or more adults in the party, because from Disney's point of view, the adults can split and each have some of the children in their room.

If you can't get connecting rooms the night you check in (since you are arriving late), ask them at check in if there will be any available the following morning and make arrangements right then to move into them as soon as they are available.

Unless you have a medical reason, no room is "blocked" ahead of time. If guests arrive before you and make a request for connecting rooms at check-in, they can re-assign yours. Technically, it's not your room until you physically arrive and check-in. We've run into some problems with having a small amount of rooms to choose from when arriving late. As previously mentioned though, you can ask about changing rooms the following day.

Reservations has told me that we have "connecting rooms" guaranteed in our reservation. The more I read on DISboards the more I wonder if this will happen. We actually NEED rather than WANT the connecting rooms due to the ages of our five children.

We were told the same thing when we called the CRO.
I also checked my email confirmation and it quite clearly says guaranteed.
My question is,what do they consider as a "family"

We have received connecting rooms for our family in the past.
I was told if the children outnumber the adults then they can guarantee it.

To the best of my knowledge, if there are two adults and 3 or more children, above the age of 3, you will get your connecting rooms. If, on the other hand, it is 4 adults and 3 kids, you may get connecting rooms or you may get adjoining rooms, because there would be enough adults to put in two non-connecting rooms with the kids. When we were at POR, we were two families, each with one 8 y/o dd. We 'requested' connecting rooms just to make it easier. In fact, we actually had two different reservation numbers. They made their reservation, I made ours. And, because I'm always looking for a cheaper deal, I got our room for about $50 less than they did. But, Disney 'tied' our reservations together in their system...each reservation noted the other parties reservation. That way, if we couldn't get connecting rooms, we could at least be adjoining. We did end up with connecting rooms, but I think that may have been due to the fact that it wasn't very crowded then. Of course, that was 6 yrs. ago...so take it with a grain of salt nowadays. Policy does change.
