Just so you know, and I take full responsiblity for this, the phone rates to call Canada from a Disney hotel are:

$27 CONNECTION FEE+ 86 cents per minute (to GTA as an example).

Our cell phone had no service the entire time we were at Disney (so strange, something must be wrong) and we had an important call to make regarding work being done on our house. I didn't even think about getting a calling card.... silly me.

Our charge was $31 for a single 5 min phone call. I asked at the desk and they said it was an AT&T charge.

Wow! I guess 99.9% of people use cell phones so this isn't any issue but just be warned!

Wow!!!!! I always bring a phone card. Bought $20 calling card from Shaw, and it's lasted for past 2 trips, and still have lots left on it for next trip.
I stoped buying US plan for cell phone. I just get the texting plan, and use room phone for calling.

Learned my lesson twelve years ago and have always used calling cards/cell phone since. Thanks for letting other people know this.

It's not just Disney resorts where this happens either. We learned this lesson many years ago when there was a family emergency while we were on vacation. Now we always, always travel with a phone card, even though we also have our cells.

$27 CONNECTION FEE

:faint:

For each outgoing call at our recent stay at Westgate Lakes Resort & Spa, we were charged a 75 cent fee. And I thought THAT was bad :crazy2: .

The 86 cents a minute is horrible enough, but that connection fee takes the cake.

Where did you get this card? I was going to bring my cell phone down, put it on airplane mode (no calls no roaming no data) and use the free wifi to check in with the family. But I would feel better about using a phone card. Can you use it from the hotel phone? Without having to pay the $27 connection fee?

Learned my lesson when my son was hospitalized on the second last day of our trip. Made some panicked phone calls to family without really looking into it and my bill was over 100 dollars:sick:

I don't go without a calling card now. You can get them at Walmart or any grocery store. We use them all the time from the room and no fees at all on the Disney end.

Sorry, just saw your question. I have Shaw home phone, and signed up for their Pre paid calling card. I didn't have any connection fees from wdw hotel.
I have read posts of some people who get phone cards from 7/11 and Walmart too.

I was one of those people who used the phone from the hotel thinking that only long distance charges. After a 15 min call our bill was $86 :faint:

Now we use our cell phones. This year I will get a US package as my daughter is coming with us and I know I will be doing more calling/texting.

I buy phone cards to use at WDW from Loblaws (or any grocery store owned by Loblaws)... I buy their PC calling cards. They have ones which are $0.04/minute US to Canada. There is no fee to use them from your resort room phone, or any pay phone.

THAT sounds like a good card for us. Last year, I had a family member who was was in hospital. We dont text, so obviously dont have a texting plan. Our per use rate was 15¢ each. Decided to bite the bullet and just go ahead and text. I had NO IDEA that texts from the USA were 75¢ each!! (my own fault for not researching further)
They of course would not adjust the $345. bill. :sad2:

Felt the burn before myself.....ouch....only happened once and I learned my lesson....yikes:eek:
