At the moment we just have dial up internet at home on our land line as we didn't use the internet much at home as we had access at work. Recently though we have been going on a lot more at home so we've decided to get broadband.

Therefore I have two questions:

1. Which broadband service is cheapest?
2. We still need a land line but we hardly ever make phone calls so which is the cheapest land line I can get?

Any advice greatly appreciated!

Too many options. :confused3

Try here to see what suppliers you get get first of all.

A lot depends on whether you can get cable or not, even sky can be a good option for some.
There are a lot of mobile phone companies doing "all-in deals" as well so it depends on your circumstances as to the best overall price.

You can compare potential suppliers here

Speak to your neighbours to find out what the real speed you will get, it will be less than that quoted for the package for several reasons, to make sure you are not paying for a package which can't deliver the performance.

I would guess if you have got by on dial up than you are not downloading much so a basic package is probably OK but think about what you might start doing if you go mad with BB.

You are usually stuck with paying BT for your land line unless you can get cable, I think some mobile companies incorporate it into their deals somehow, not sure of the details.

As a rough rule you will get a better deal if you bundle the BB in with another item. You can usually bundle in your BB with a phone call deal of some sort, free calls for some or all part of the day for example.

See I told you too many choices, take your time to get the right deal for you. :thumbsup2

Do you get sky or cable TV? If so may well be worth looking at joint packages with them. With sky we get the phones for £5 a month free calls to UK landlines and lots of foreign ones (including USA). They have a free broadband if you are in the right area (we are not) but they have a reasonable reputation. We are currently with BT but will probably change when our contract runs out.

Pipex for £9.99/mth for 8Meg line.
Unfortunately O2 and Virgin who are rated highly are not available here:confused3

I have a BT line and use it for calls, looked at a few packages but i am quite happy with my provider.
I have been with Pipex for 4 years, was paying £24 for the first couple of years, then considered changing so called Pipex and they gave me £9.99 a month can only manage 4 MG although they say 8MG and no download limit so more than happy. you can go on here and have a look and decide what is right for you, and check the speed of your connection.#

We have a BT telephone line with Sky broadband and Sky+ TV. We have all the channels on the Sky+ and adding their best broadband package was only an extra £10 per month.

We were previously with NTL/Virgin for everything but got so hacked off with their terrible customer services/all the problems that we cancelled everything. I can't begin to tell you the trouble we had with them but my advice is to steer well clear!
