While we are on the 7 day cruise, I will want to be in touch with several family members. Is it best to wait until I am in port and call from shore? What is the cheapest way to communicate with those so unfortunate souls who are not sailing in paradise?

Well ship to shore rates can be over $6.95 per minute...so either buy an international calling card that can be used from the ports you will be in or we just use the internet onboard to keep in touch....the 7 day cruise has an unlimited plan for $89.00 for the week. If you choose the by the minute plan it is $.75 per minute on the internet.

our Verizon cell phone worked in port at St. Thomas. My wife called home from the ship and that cost a fortune. Avoid it if you can.

You might also consider e-mailing them. I tell my family that it will be the ONLY way they hear from me.

I make it a rule never to check on children, pets, or business left behind the minute that last line is thrown back to the dock... vacations are a time to disconnect 100%. If you are going to miss someone that much, bring them with you!

Does anyone know how expensive it is to use Verizon while at port from St. Thomas?

wingawh: you could also buy a phone card and use it at port in St. Thomas. There are many payphones right when you exit the ship. if you send your family an email, it'll be .75 cent a minute from the ship's internet cafe. i'm sorry i don't know how much verizon costs. we have nextel which was absolutely useless!
