PHM 2015-In Pursuit of Cupcakes While Running in Glass Slippers

Boma is my favorite of all. Haven't been to Narcoosee's yet, but it is our one and only ADR for our Oct trip. :)

Hi Ladies! I am new to these boards, but have been a runner for 15+ years (started in college). It has always been a dream of mine to run a Disney race and I believe that the Glass Slipper challenge is my Disney race this year! We joined the DVC last year so it made it possible to do more Disney races for me. I have the marathon on my schedule for 2016.

I can tell you a little about myself. I have a 7 year old daughter who I adore and who is more and more interested in my races. I am college professor. I have run 7 half marathons, 1 marathon, 2 Ragnar relays, and more 5ks, 10ks, and 15ks than I can count. I have a Ragnar next month, a half marathon in June, a half in Sept, another half in October, and a full in November. I am sure there will be more smaller races in there, I am all about the bling :).

This year for my marathon I am training with the Galloway plan. Not using any of his apps, I have a Garmin for split times and use the Gymboss app for the intervals.

I have a few questions:

When does registration usually open? As a DVC member, I believe you get to register 10 days before the public. I would love to take advantage of that.

Since it starts and finishes in Epcot, is BW one of the better places to stay? I want to book that as soon as I can (7 mths since AKL is my home resort).

Thanks ladies!

Registration is on July 15th. Yes, I believe there is early registration, but I don't think it's 10 days. Not sure as I'm not DVC or a Visa card holder.

BW would be a nice place to stay. You cannot walk to the START, you still have to use the bus, but after the race the park will be open, so if you have a ticket with you (or your magic band), you should be able to just go into Epcot and walk back to the room! That will be handy! :thumbsup2

Thanks so much Karen! I put it on my calendar. I did just find out that Annual Pass holders and Vacation Club members can register on July 7th. I am talking it over with DH tonight, but he knows this has been in our plans. It is going to be a little bit of a discussion because we are going to Disney in July and again the first week of December. But the PHM was going to be a race vacation not a family vacation so we may be able to swing it.

welcome! I stayed at BW for PHM this year and it was great! I did walk back after the race and it was so nice...

Just tried three of the BOG cupcakes at lunch today

Not super impressed with them. They're ok but not note worthy.

Welcome!! WDW Marathon is on the books for 2016 for me also. Cant wait for that one! I am doing my first Ragnar in June, Madison to Chicago. Excited, but nervous also as I don't have any idea what to expect.

I saw you found the answer in a later post about registration being a week earlier for you. :thumbsup2

I would suggest BW or BC for the race for convenience. As someone mentioned, you cant walk to the race start, but you can come back to your hotel via IG with your park ticket. Otherwise one of the monorail resorts are a nice choice too with the monorail opening very early on race mornings.

Ragnars are an experience and can be very fun. I did the New Haven, CT, to Boston one a few years ago, then last year the Cape Cod. I am doing Cape Cod again, but this will be my last. It is expensive and I want to focus on my Disney runs. Marathons are my new races of choice so I want to enjoy those for a bit. Although, half marathons are my favorite, just enough of a challenge without feeling like you have to give up your weekends to long runs.

Well that's sad, the two on the right are two on my list for the PHM!!! I'll add the lemon to make my perfect trio! I tried the Strawberry one in November and I liked it....

I am anxous to try that Master's Cupcake though... I made they Grey Stuff about a month ago & it was good!

Keep trying out those cupcakes for us!! Help us refine our list!!

Today I went for a quick run before I picked up DS7 from school. It was terrible! I've felt tired and run down all week. Plus the wind was blowing and I was fighting to keep the jogging stroller in front of me. This is the pond I was jogging around. You can see how the wind was blowing the fountain.

Cupcake Friday
(as if Friday in not sweet enough)

Lemon Meringue
More Cupcakes from BOG

Well it looks like we have about finished all the cupcake offerings in Magic Kingdom, other than the seasonal ones (which are standard cupcakes with a seasonal decoration…boring). The cupcakes at Big Top really did not appeal to anyone, and someone suggested that we go back to BOG and try out the rest…

Apparently the Lemon Meringue cupcake is the ugly stepsister in BOG Quadruplet grouping of cupcakes as I can’t find a lot of reviews or a decent description of the cupcake. Basically it is a vanilla sponge cake filled with "a bit too sweet” (according to reviews) lemon custard filling, and flamed meringue icing.

I like lemon flavor, but I wonder if I would like this cupcake. Has anyone tried it? Reviews? Should we add this one to the cupcake crawl celebration?

Humpty Dance by Digital Underground

and

Kay Mari and Live, Love, Lead by Sean Forrest he's a dear friend of mine and such an inspiration and makes beautiful music. It really helps to hear his music during my longer runs.

Having music that you can connect to really helps on longer runs!

Table service:
Akershus breakfast buffet. I love the potatoes.

Quick service: Baked sweet potato from Liberty Square Market and a Pork shank and LeFeu's brew from Gaston's.

ETA: as much as I love Table service, I think my favorite meals are quick service.

I am not sure why I don't do a lot of quick service...I guess I am a big breakfast, snack all day and a nice dinner type of gal. I did love the sandwich I had at Port Royale and the jerk chips are awesome!

Yikes, that is hard! I love Yachtsman, O'hana, Via Napoli, Raglan Road, Cali Grill (haven't been post refurb though)...but in the end I chose Le Cellier. We had Christmas lunch at Le Cellier back in 2012, and I chose Le Cellier as my celebratory dinner after PHM this year. It is one of our favorite places at WDW.

The pretzel breadsticks are sooooo good, especially when dipped in the cheddar cheese soup ::yes::

Yum pretzel bread!

For dessert, honestly, we never get dessert here. I am not a crème brulee person, so I am picking a dessert from elsewhere ;) Not playing by the rules here, but...oh well.

O'hana bread pudding!! No sharing...ok, I share a little bit.

We don't typically eat at counter service places because hubby doesn't like searching for tables for our family of 6, so I can't really comment on one of those.

Not sharing my bread pudding either!

I'm a fan of Narcosees - yummy food and beer list. I am a seafood gal so I also love the giant sushi roll at Cal Grill. Flying Fish is good but always slow...and I did do the one in a lifetime meal after the PHM, with wine pairings. Made for some smiley photos afterward

:rotfl2: But you had a good time and I love lifetime meals...

Have a sentimental side that goes to Crystal Palace for brunch every trip, at 8:00 am on the first full day, after arriving by ferry. Not rigid just always did that with my parents and it stuck.

8 am at CP is my favorite breakfast!

Quick service - only go small - I am a brunch and dinner gal - so I power up with a dole whip:) yum but have gone to BoG for lunch a couple times.

That's how we roll too on vacation.

Boma is my favorite of all. Haven't been to Narcoosee's yet, but it is our one and only ADR for our Oct trip. :)

I have got to get to Boma...love your only ADR choice for October!

I so can relate to the wind...I have to deal with it too most of the spring...and this year it has been really bad with the drought and dust storms.

This is my view while running.

Rest and a good meal should help. You might think about banana for energy!

Warning...about to Whine!

Ugh, I have been up since 1:30 am...growing old stinks ladies! I have a full day of work in front of me, plus the 8 hour drive afterwards with an early wake up call to pick up my race packet in the morning and then the 5K! I sure hope I make it.

Went for my 2nd short run of the week last night...not a good run! Shin splint issues. Ugh, when will they ever go away and stay away! I got to thinking that maybe there is something more underneath my shin splint issues that keep coming out of no where...stretching, icing, taping, compression sleeves, stabilizing shoes...

Well I think I might have made somewhat of a connection...looking back at my run diary for the last year and then the calendar I keep for my GYN I am noticing a pattern...shin splints are worse or usually pop up around the time of my monthly (or somewhat monthly, another age thing) visits...could there be a connection?

I tried googling, but did not find much...posted on a FB running group of ladies and of course Debra :thumbsup2 comes up with some answers and thoughts for me. THANKS DEBRA for making me not feel like I was crazy with this connection. She gave some really good advice that I am going to try and talk to the doctor about next week.

Please send prayers and happy thoughts for me today as I make my journey...safe travels and well wishes that I get through this 5K!

I am a little stressed by the 5K now that shin splints are in play once again, so much for trying to get a PB on Saturday...now my goal is just to finish it with a respectable time (under 16 minute mile...I had hoped for under 13 mm).

I hate hard runs! They just happen though and interestingly they are usually when it's windy for me. Running through wind is really HARD! I bet the next run will be easier for you. Definitely get sleep, maybe some stretching beforehand and some carbs to give those muscles some energy.

Thanks for the honest review. Bummer that they were not knock your socks off good.

Hmmm...I haven't had meringue in years, I didn't like it when I was younger. I like lemon flavor things ok, so since these are smaller anyway, sharing one to taste it sounds ok since we'll already be there??

Ugh, so sorry Tammie. I know having your body constantly injured is no fun. I'm always searching for answers, I swear my google bar makes things up at this point b/c I've asked so many crazy questions! I have no idea about the correlation with the shin splints and TOM, but my son had them and I bought him low drop/minimal shoes and they went away and he never had them again? :confused3 I hope you find some answers and your day isn't too long!

I am probably INCREDIBLY biased on this as Lemon Meringue is my FAVORITE sweet ever (I love it even more than chocolate people, that's how biased I will be with this review!!)

But I LOVED this cupcake. I mean, don't get me wrong- I have had better actual 'Lemon Meringue' pie.. but given the fact this was on a cupcake in the Magic Kingdom- there was no way I was NOT getting this.

And it was my favorite of the three I tried at BOG. I WILL be getting this at PHM. Even if it's not on our 'official' list. :cool1:

Mmmm.. I want one now.

Anyways. My point is- my very (incredibly) biased personal review of this cupcake was :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

I want to say.. I strongly believe there is a big correlation to running performance and monthlies. I actaully did reserach on this as I noticed it in my own running to see if I was just crazy or there is other evidence out there supporting it... and there was evidence.

For me, running is MUCH harder the week leading up to my monthly. Like flat out difficult for me. I can almost ALWAYS tell what is coming because of how much I struggle to finish, how my body hurts when running, how winded I am, & the amount of energy I have to go distances.

The articles I read speak about how the hormone levels changing do effect all of that in a rather major way. So I absolutely buy into this theory. It's very true for me.

My biggest fear leading up to the Wine & Dine (and moving into the ToT and PHM) is that they will fall the week before my monthly. Because I have a feeling if they do.. I will be screwed.

Hugs. And best wishes for a great race with NO injuries this weekend!

I am having the same issue with my foot. It really sucks the motivation out of you. (((Hugs)))

I am heading to my chiropractor when I get home. I think he may be able to help me a bit. Have you tried one? I love mine. He's very nice and knows how to work with runners injuries.

I agree, aunt flow definitely messes with your energy and body. I have run most of my halves and my marathon during a monthly so I wonder what I would be capable of without having it! In terms of shin splints, do you get them every month or is it with the change of seasons, running seasons that is. I find that when I run mostly on the treadmill during the winter months and start my spring running on the road, my shins take a beating. Plus shin splints are an inflammation so that can be aggravated by hormones.

In terms of tough runs, they happen and they suck when they do. What I tell myself is something my yoga instructor tells me. Each day you come to the mat (or road for running) you come with a different body. Some days, it is easier and your body does what you want, other days, not so much. Most importantly is to respect the body you have that day and do what you can. Also, high winds and pushing a jogging stroller definitely makes a run much much harder. My running pal and I were saying there should be a "wind chill factor" for running like in high winds running 1 mile is really like running 1.5 miles or something like that because you have to work so hard.

Overall, be easy on yourself, some days are awesome and some days are not, just come back strong the next time.

and OMG with all these cupcakes ladies! I love cupcakes! I love anything sweet really.

so sorry to hear that! I've never ha them but I hear they are painful. I wear regular neutral shoes that are squishy and they helped me with my ankle and worked on changing my form.

As for the other part - I can never sleep a full night anymore unless I go to bed super late and tired. It stinks. Do you take vitamins? I started taking iron pills and b12 the entire week of flow an it seemed to help me.
A lot of extra water too. Some friends at work also take valerian for sleep.

Hope you find relief and maybe squeeze in a catnap before that drive. I'm an east coaster who never drives that far so I can't imagine.
Good luck with the race!

Tammie,
Here is wishing you well on your 5k. I pray you have fun and do not have more injuries. Getting older is hard. In my mind I think my body should do XYZ but the reality is another. One year older and another pregnancy has slowed me down some more it is hard to imagine that I peaked at 11:30 pace when I was 38:rotfl2:

But hoping a chiropractor can give you some pain relief and help with your symptoms! Eat some yummy ice cream for me.
