PHM 2015-In Pursuit of Cupcakes While Running in Glass Slippers

Tammie - Safe travels and GL with your 5K...I still haven't signed up for mine yet...5 more days to get my butt in gear and just DO it already. I'm such a giant baby chicken.

About the "time of the month" issues...oddly, I seem to be opposite everyone. I run so much better. I think it's b/c during that week I tend to have severe lower back pain, and running helps me with that. I feel lighter on my feet. I do get headaches after running during that week though, so I'm not sure what that's all about.

On the training front...
This week I added in a 20 minute "yoga for runners" session that I found on Youtube when I got home from my run, and my muscle soreness/stiffness is practically zero now.

I did three miles of run/walking on a new trail yesterday. It's wooded and lovely with a stream running around it. It passes under the interstate and around a golf course. I didn't get murdered by a stranger beneath the overpass, so I consider it a success (and you better believe I ran full out under there too...it was kind of creepy-ish. But I watch a lot of Investigation Discovery channel). I wasn't happy with my time, but I'm chalking that up to being in a new environment, and it being the warmest morning so far this year. Or maybe I'm just a slow turtle. That's very likely.

Oh, and on the subject of cupcakes...One of our local bakeries that was featured on Cupcake Wars (we lost in the first round :( ) had a key lime on the menu this week. I had a good workout that day so I had one and it was DELIGHTFUL.

Sugar Kneads was featured on CupCake Wars here in Ga. They went out first episode as well. I forgot to check them out. All this cupcake talk I think I'm going to have to make a trip!

Rest and a good meal should help. You might think about banana for energy![/QUOTE]

Thanks! My normal breakfast before a race is a piece of wheat bread with peanut butter and honey and a banana. I'm already feeling a little better today, so I am going to rest my legs and try to get a good night's sleep!

Warning...about to Whine!

Ugh, I have been up since 1:30 am...growing old stinks ladies! I have a full day of work in front of me, plus the 8 hour drive afterwards with an early wake up call to pick up my race packet in the morning and then the 5K! I sure hope I make it.

Went for my 2nd short run of the week last night...not a good run! Shin splint issues. Ugh, when will they ever go away and stay away! I got to thinking that maybe there is something more underneath my shin splint issues that keep coming out of no where...stretching, icing, taping, compression sleeves, stabilizing shoes...

Well I think I might have made somewhat of a connection...looking back at my run diary for the last year and then the calendar I keep for my GYN I am noticing a pattern...shin splints are worse or usually pop up around the time of my monthly (or somewhat monthly, another age thing) visits...could there be a connection?

I tried googling, but did not find much...posted on a FB running group of ladies and of course Debra :thumbsup2 comes up with some answers and thoughts for me. THANKS DEBRA for making me not feel like I was crazy with this connection. She gave some really good advice that I am going to try and talk to the doctor about next week.

Please send prayers and happy thoughts for me today as I make my journey...safe travels and well wishes that I get through this 5K!

I am a little stressed by the 5K now that shin splints are in play once again, so much for trying to get a PB on Saturday...now my goal is just to finish it with a respectable time (under 16 minute mile...I had hoped for under 13 mm).

AF is here for me too, and why I have felt so run down this week. Good luck tomorrow at the race! Have a safe trip driving too. My DSS used to live in TX and I know how far apart everything is! I have driven all the way across TX once from Texarkana to El Paso too. I was so happy to see New Mexico!

I hate hard runs! They just happen though and interestingly they are usually when it's windy for me. Running through wind is really HARD! I bet the next run will be easier for you. Definitely get sleep, maybe some stretching beforehand and some carbs to give those muscles some energy.

Thanks for the suggestion!

I agree, aunt flow definitely messes with your energy and body. I have run most of my halves and my marathon during a monthly so I wonder what I would be capable of without having it! In terms of shin splints, do you get them every month or is it with the change of seasons, running seasons that is. I find that when I run mostly on the treadmill during the winter months and start my spring running on the road, my shins take a beating. Plus shin splints are an inflammation so that can be aggravated by hormones.

In terms of tough runs, they happen and they suck when they do. What I tell myself is something my yoga instructor tells me. Each day you come to the mat (or road for running) you come with a different body. Some days, it is easier and your body does what you want, other days, not so much. Most importantly is to respect the body you have that day and do what you can. Also, high winds and pushing a jogging stroller definitely makes a run much much harder. My running pal and I were saying there should be a "wind chill factor" for running like in high winds running 1 mile is really like running 1.5 miles or something like that because you have to work so hard.

Overall, be easy on yourself, some days are awesome and some days are not, just come back strong the next time.

and OMG with all these cupcakes ladies! I love cupcakes! I love anything sweet really.

Yes, the wind with the stroller yesterday was tough! I was glad I had to cut it short to get DS from school. I was done!

As for the cupcake of the day, I would respectfully decline. I don't care for meringue or lemon.

Not a cupcake, but the Bavarian cheesecake and fruit compote at Biergarten is amazing! Ugh now I need to run to burn off all the extra calories!

My poor lemon cupcake... no love for it!

No fear my running friends- should this somehow appear in the cupcake run, I will eat it for you.

That's what cupcake running friends are for...

"For good cupcakes. And bad cupcakes. I'll eat them all forever more.... That's what cupcake friends are for....."

;)

Hope you all have a fantastic weekend!

You are having WAAYYY to much fun!!! Don't mind me I'm a little jealous of your
Desserts in Disney World shots.

Ran the Legoland 5k with DS this morning. We had to leave the hotel by 5:30 so it was reminiscent of a WDW race but UGH it was early!

Wow- just read all 45 pages! You guys are very inspiring. I wouldn't describe myself as a "runner" but I think I want to change that. I did a 5k a few years ago, got the t-shirt & crossed it off the bucket list. I've been thinking about signing up for the princess half in 2015 b/c running through Disney just sounds fun! Even with the whole running part. Thanks for sharing your ap recommendations - looking into the Galloway & ismooth run to see which will work better for me. I can totally get behind a group motivated by cupcakes, personally, I always have a few in the freezer to defrost when a cupcake emergency strikes. I'm already scoping out local 10k's for late summer/early fall so I can get in a timed corral. Hopefully, my motivation holds up!

I finished my 10 K yesterday. I haven't seen the official results, but I didn't think it was terrible for my 1st time running that distance. I was however the very last person to cross the finish line. The Jr. High cheerleaders were there cheering for me just like everyone else. This was a small local race and everyone was encouraging and supportive.

Tammy - great job on the Blue Bell run! I hope your trip back home is safe!

Congrats!!! Yhea on finishing your first 10K!

Doesn't matter if you were first or last to cross that finish line!!! It matters only that you did it!!!!

Way to go!!!

Since it's your first one it's an automatic PR! Finishing is always a win. Congrats
