Although I shouldn't, that would give me 4 races in 4 weeks (PDR, Everest thingy, Army Ten-Miler, Baltimore). That's crazy right? Someone talk some sense into me.
Cindy - 4 races in 4 weeks is the perfect plan. You can just do the races and maybe a happy little 3 miler or 2 during each week. No training!!

Baltimore is definitely something to think about.

Nice job doing the Race for the Cure.

Did you happen to search San Diego results by city? I think more people from Arlington ran there than MCM.

For future reference, this is not like the surface of the sun. It's much more humid here!

Howard - A fine effort for your first official training week.

Dave - You really have to figure out how to avoid that November meeting but book your Jan. WDW room now just in case. You can use your yard sale moola.

Steve - Achilles truly are the worst. Just take it easy. You've still got plenty of time. You can start when summer finally makes it up your way.

As Cindy said earlier, it is just a bit warm here. I ran last night before work and since the sun was setting it didn't really feel too bad. Maybe I'll try the same tactic tonight for a few slow miles.

Happy Sweltering Saturday! Sheesh, did i sleep through June & July or something?? It's 94 here right now. UGH.

Cindy - Congrats on your first post marathon run, hope you're happy with RnR now. It's all good. NYC is going to be toooo much fun, I'm so excited. Matt will have a great time, there are so many museums to choose from, good luck! Thanks for the link, I'll check it out. We'll have to meet somewhere along the line. Our hotel is near Central Park where it spills out onto 7th ave. I figure that way the family can see me twice! That is, if they're coming :lmao:

Garbanzo - It's NYC 1/2, no NYC full, until '09...guaranteed! Maine marathon on Oct, eh? Don't worry, Lou's taking care of all the reservations for Philly :rotfl2: , you just have to show up!! Fix that achilles, man!

Mike - Run some hills on that cheesy slow mile day @ some snail-pace, just make sure the day b4 & after is easy. That's my master plan for you!::yes:: As far as a fall marathon, Steve's inviting everyone to his house for some marathon in October....see ya there!:rolleyes1

Dave - Oh the sacrifices we must make for work...Listen, don't sweat it. Run Maine in October then Disney in '09...but Disney's a must this year, ok? No bailing out! Too exciting you're going to the World in July with the family. Stay sane & cool!

Howard - :woohoo: Training has commenced!! Is it true that you were diapered in a "Terrible Towel"?

Lou - How's work? Is it just as hot down there as it is here??

Colleen & Sara - What are you witches up to? :stir:

Ran 6 miles this a.m. b4 the sun came out of the sky & landed in my town. It was ok. 45 CT last night. Guess I gotta start training Monday.

Not for nuttin' but...

Philly registration goes up $15 at the end of June.

Sara wrote: Howard - Are you still basking in the post-graduate afterglow ? I hope your weekend far exceeded your expectations and I'm sure you're glad the long hours of study are behind you. More time for running.

Sara: Commencement weekend was really nice. I had a great time! I am basking in the afterglow of the sun; it got to about 95 or something close today. I am sure your temps were similar. I am enjoying the evenings the most, it is nice to be able to relax and turn in at a reasonable time. I have mostly been running after work, but did one 3 miles earlier in the week in the morning before work. Today was brutal, but I did well with an over pace of 10:11 for 7 miles.

Jodi wrote: Howard - Keep up the training, dude! Nice times!

Jodi: Thanks! It is coming back to me slowly. I am not without a pain here and there, but I am getting back into the program of regular runs. Tomorrow I am supposed to XT which should be a nice break for my sore arch and shins.

Steve wrote: Howard: Again, congrats on the graduation. I'm sorry your Antarctic Non-Flying Bird Team lost the sporting ice skating contest. (Did I just give it away that I don't follow NHL very much?)

Steve: I am sorry the Pens lost too, but I can appreciate the effort it took to hang with the Mighty Red Wings, they were really tough in the finals. Who is the closest NHL team to Maine? The Bruins?

Cindy wrote: Howard - sounds like you have jumped right into the training Cindy wrote: Howard - Training has commenced!! Is it true that you were diapered in a "Terrible Towel"?

Cindy: I put together a training matrix from a running website that I am following. I had to kind of fudge the first four weeks since the program wasn’t quite long enough to make it up to the MCM. So I am sticking with what is in the matrix for now. I know there may be times I can do something that is scheduled, but I will make it up. I have already lost about 5 or 6 pounds since school has wrapped up due to the running. I need to keep that moving in the same direction.

As for the Terrible Towel, I was just joking… I meant it as an example of how important it is to a true Steeler (and Myron Cope) Fan.

Mike wrote: Howard - A fine effort for your first official training week.

Mike: Thank you very much! 18 miles is pretty insignificant to what you are capable of, but I’ll get there. I am really just getting back into shape, it may take a while.

Hello to all those I missed (SteveOH, Lou, Colleen, Dave, etc.)!

Mike - Baltimore is probably my #1 option. My only concern is training for it because I already scheduled a couple of 1/2's in September. Last year I used October to get in a bunch of LR's for Philly. We'll see. I hear you on the $15 bump in cost for Philly in a few weeks. I'll register this week.

Steve - Thanks for the offer. I'll definitely keep it in mind. One of the best vacations my wife and I ever took was a trip to NE where we spent 4 days in Maine. We hit an Indian summer October weekend where the temps were around 70 and the leaves were awesome. Bar Harbor was incredible. I imagine the Maine marathon as a very scenic race.

Dave - That stinks about the potential conflict with Philly. I guess work comes first, especially if it is a new job.

Jodi- How hot is it here? Insane HOT! Yesterday was one of the hottest days in a long while. Nice job on getting in 6 miles in this heat.

Howard - Nice job on the training. Looks like you are having no trouble getting back in the swing of things.

Sara - Nice job walking 6 miles. I'm happy to hear your knee is feeling better. I guess living in upsate NY you don't have to deal with the 3 H's (hazy-hot-humid) nearly as much as we do here. In the summer Orlando and South Jersey can be just as nasty.

Cindy - Nice job on running the 5K. Good to see you are getting back in gear. Can't wait to hear the race report.

Last night me and the family went into Philly to watch a movie on the big screen (Eagles Kids Night) at Lincold Financial Field. What were we thinking? As we crossed over the bridge I looked over towards the city and the buildings were almost invisible because of the haze. It was SO HOT last night. Went home and swam in SiL's pool from 9PM to 11PM.

Got in 10 miles today in the SCORCHING heat. I started around 7AM and it was already nasty. I forgot how hard it is to run in this heat/humidity.

Lou

Hey McPhillies,

Oh, I can just feel the love here.:lovestruc I guess I will do Philly and Disney. So, which resort for Disney, I need to start making plans? We need to stay somewhere relatively close so we can go for a beer after the marathon and tell our race stories.::yes:: (No one is allowed to book a 4 p.m. or earlier flight Sunday out of MCO.)

Lou, the MCM entry is yours if you want it.

I will write more later, just got home from a camping trip in the mountains and I am exhausted. There should be a law that once you are over 40, you shouldn't have to sleep on the ground in a damp tent.

Lou, the MCM entry is yours if you want it.

Colleen - THANKS so much! :cool1: I'll touch base with you to make arrangments to purchase your bib. Now I can plan for the fall season...

DL 1/2 - 8/31
PDR 1/2 - 9/21
LBI 18-Miler - 10/12
MCM - 10/26
BF Bridge Run (10K) - 11/2
Philly 11/23

:yay: Those are the ones I will be walking/running/something as well so I am VERY happy you'll be there:hug: . I am staying offsite for WDW Friday-Monday. At this point I'll most likely have DH and the kiddos with me since I had to break it to them that I cancelled their Hawaii cruise:confused3 and they can't accept any less than 3 vacations a year:rotfl: :lmao: .

Lou - :worship: Holy smack, 10 miles in the 3H's is no small feat!! Glad Colleen's hooking you up for MCM:thumbsup2 and that you fall schedule is shaping up nicely.

Howard - Great job getting back into the training mode:yay: .

Mike - Thanks so much for the reminder:hug: . Working in finance, you have to know I take my money very seriously:rotfl: . $15 saved on registration can go towards lots of other fun things:hippie: .

Jodi - Good luck on starting the NYC training Monday. Nice job on the 6:banana: in the heat. Nothing much going on here - Corinne's 7th b-day is on Thursday then I'm going to Boston next week on business;) .

Steve - Thanks for the reply on my leg. I know it isn't good to wear heels a lot due to the shortening of the achilles and PF issues and I usually only do when I travel for business. So very sorry you're struggling with your achilles these days and you have my deepest sypathies:hug: . I hope the aggressive therapy helps you out bunches and you're back out on the roads in no time. Yeah, I hear you with the goal time for Philly:rolleyes1 .

Dave - All kidding aside, you know we'll still  if you have to ditch us for Philly but we will be sad and will miss you. That being said, it would obligate you to WDW '09 for sure!! Sorry we'll miss you in July as well but it's great you're able to get a vacation in with the family:thumbsup2 .

Cindy - popcorn:: Patiently waiting for that race report! Man, if you'd stop running races perhaps you could sqeeze in a little time on the computer:rotfl2: . I only say that because I'm insanely jealous:rolleyes1 . Too cool about the Race For The Cure.

Chester - Where are you?! Please let us know you and Tracy are alright.

Well, the chicks have been patiently waiting to go out to the pool so I guess that's my destiny for this afternoon. I walked 6 miles before Church this morning and I'll be painting Lauren's room tonight for a little cross training. The legs holding its own:goodvibes . Stay cool y'all!!

Hey Bots

It's hot & I hate everyone.

Glad Colleen's on board for PHilly & WDW! Are you SURE I can't leave until 4 p.m? Not sure if there's a flight that late. Don't forget, I'm only running the 1/2 on Sat. I know, I'm a wimp. Can't ya'll party with me on Sat.? Camping in THIS heat???:worship:

Sara - sooooo happy for you that the ankle's holding up!! You SO deserve this good luck. I'll be up next weekend for a swim. Glad you'll be @ Disney '09

Dave - You MUST do Disney in '09!!!!!

Michael - Thanks for the heads up on the $15 increase. Sincerely, cheapbeeatch.com! That's what, a gallon of gas?

Lou - :worship: Ditto on the 10 miles, you are my heat-hero!! Wish I had a sil w/ a pool! My sil just annoys my brother & milks him for all he's worth :rolleyes1 . But I digress....

No activity for this tick today. Speaking of ticks, I spent over $400 on my dog last week b/c she's got lyme disease ::yes:: . Can you say euthanasia????? :faint: I'll run 3 or 4 tomorrow a.m., even though my "training" schedule says to go 2 miles @ a 11:07 pace  .:thumbsup2

Ok, here it is finally, my race report. WARNING - it is long and rambling. I tried to edit it, but I was getting annoyed and felt like I was never going to finish it, so here it is in all its unedited glory. Hopefully, it makes some sense and is intelligible.

Rock ‘N’ Roll Marathon – San Diego

My second marathon.

Friday May 30th

We flew to San Diego. We didn’t have a direct flight. I know having a connection saved some money. Not sure how much, but I’m going to pretend that it was A LOT so that I can think it was the right decision. Not fun. Delays in both airports and our flight got rerouted (to be longer) because of storms. 11 hours after we left our place to drive to the airport, we landed in San Diego.

Matt’s parents picked us up at the airport and we went straight to the expo. I’m really glad we got to go on Friday. It was sort of crowded, but not too bad. I’m sure it was packed on Saturday. As I expected, the expo was huge with tons of vendors. I tried more free samples than I can count, saw the picture of the special medal people get for doing both WDW and Disneyland, stood on some machine that vibrates you and is supposed to help get your fast twitch muscle fibers working faster, etc. Matt’s mom won a free loaf of bread. We registered for the Philly Distance Run for only $35 ($20 off) and I made a few purchases.

Although Matt’s parents live in San Diego, we had decided to stay at a hotel, mainly so that we could sleep in a bed instead of a futon and so that we wouldn’t have to deal with getting downtown on race morning (which I had read can be difficult). So, after spending over 2 hours at the expo we went to check in to the hotel and then went out to dinner in Little Italy.

Saturday May 31

We picked a hotel (the Doubletree) that was 1.1 miles from the start so that we could walk to the start instead of having to get a hotel shuttle (most of the hotels offered shuttles either included in room price or for a charge) (we liked the hotel, btw, it was one of the less expensive options and it had just been renovated). Anyway, we did our 2 mile run by running up to the start area so that we would know what we were doing on Sunday. The remainder of the day was spent doing far more walking than is recommend for those running a marathon the next day. My best friend from undergrad (who lives in LA) came down to San Diego for the day to have lunch and walk around town with us. We then went to Matt’s parents for an early dinner and were in bed by 8:30 (I could normally never go to bed that early – there are some advantages of flying to a different time zone and never letting your body adjust to the time).

Race Day

I thought the race was very well organized. The only real complaint I have about this race is that there were far too few port-o-potties at the start. The lines were crazy long. The race started at 6:30. We got to the start area around 5:30, got some water, and got in line right away. It took almost a half hour. After we walked around a bit to loosen up and checked our bags (bag check was easy), I really wanted to use the port-o-potty again, but I would have been in line until well past the start of the race, and I didn’t want to do that.

The race started a few minutes late, but nothing terrible. As I was running the first half of the race, I felt great and was enjoying the experience. Water stops were great. Volunteers were great. The bands were great. There were a ton of fans – way more than at the MCM. There was one neighborhood we ran through where every house was giving out orange slices. The course was less flat than I expected, but I wouldn’t call it hilly. A lot of people have complained that the highways that a significant portion of the race is run on are really slanted. They are, but it didn’t bother me that much when I was running (although I think it might have impacted the way my legs felt afterwards). The weather was great at the start, but when the sun came out around 10:00, it got really, really hot.

Actually, I do have one other complaint – Fruit Punch Accelerade is nasty, but I knew that beforehand and planned on not drinking any on the course (I did have a sip at the end, but it kind of made me want to vomit).

All of my comments above about the race really apply to the first 19 or so miles. After that, I was miserable and I don’t really have any idea of what was going on. I wasn’t paying attention to anything, just trying to understand why I felt so sick. I felt great until 15 or 16 miles in. I really thought I was going to make my goal of 4:30. In terms of what went wrong, my one thought is that it is likely that I was dehydrated. As I mentioned before, I didn’t drink that much water in the beginning because I didn’t want to have to wait in the port-o-potty lines.

It was hard seeing the 4:30 pace group pass me between miles 20 and 21, but I think I kept a pretty good attitude about it the whole time. During and after MCM, I was kind of disappointed in myself because I felt like I just gave in to the desire to stop running and walked when I didn’t really need to. This was different. I really felt like I was going to pass out or be sick if I didn’t slow down and walk for a bit. I really don’t think I actually walked that much of the race, but my running pace also slowed down significantly from mile 19 on that I went from being on pace to finish in 4:30 to ultimately finishing in 4:50:28. (At least it is a 6 and a half minute PR).

As for Matt, he didn’t have a good race either. I was really sad when I came up behind him at mile 23, I was really hoping that he would have a good race. He ran the first half too fast and the just felt like he had nothing left by mile 19 and walked most of the rest of the race. He had missed a lot of runs because of his knee problems so he wasn’t exactly well trained.

When I saw the finish line, I almost wanted to cry, I was that happy to be able to stop running. I have since seen the video of me finishing. It felt like I was running at the time, but looking at the video, it looks more like some sort of hobbling/limping combination. The finish area was great – tons of people were finishing with me, but it wasn’t congested. The first thing you got at the finish was an ice-cold towel – this was fabulous (I think Elite racing does this at all their events – we got one last year at VA Beach). I then got some water and and my medal (very nice, btw). There was plenty of food, but I was having a hard time eating anything, a few bites of a plain bagel were about all I could manage. At some point in here Matt finished a few minutes behind me and we found each other while still inside the finisher area. Then I started to get the chills really badly. I got a Mylar and we got our gear check bags and put some dry clothes on. We called Matt’s parents and started the search of trying to find them. This took awhile. After we found them, we sat and rested a bit before making the journey to their car. Unfortunately, I never got my free beer. I wasn’t sure I could’ve kept it down, but I would have tried if the line wasn’t so darn long.

The logistics of getting back to the car after the race were somewhat challenging. The race ends in the Marine Corps Depot. No parking. Everyone has to park in a lot near the airport and walk or take shuttles to the finish area. All the hotel shuttles were also picking people up at the entrance to this lot because they couldn’t drive on the base. When we decided it was time to leave, we went over to where the shuttles were to take people to the parking lot and hotel shuttles. The lines were massive. I couldn’t imagine standing in a line for that long, so I decided we should walk. Race organizers said that the lot was ¾ of a mile away. Not sure where they were measuring from, but we walked a little over a mile and a half to get to the car. I’m sure it was probably good for me to keep moving, but I was moving really, really slowly. It was as if my legs didn’t work properly anymore. My knees were so sore that the act of bending them and moving was a challenge. This didn’t happen after MCM so I can only guess that running on a lot of concrete and the slanted roads might have had something to do with it.

Matt’s parents dropped us off at our hotel and we went in the pool and the hot tub and relaxed a bit. When we felt better, we had Matt’s parents pick us up again and we went out for some great Mexican food and beer in Old Town. Pat Benatar was the headliner concert but we didn’t make it. The concert was kind of far away and would have required us walking to the trolley stop and using the trolley. I was still not able to walk in any way that would be called close to normal, so that didn’t seem like a good idea. Instead, we went to the convenience store, got a 6 pack of Miller Lite and drank it in our hotel bed.

The next morning I felt much better. I was sore, but able to walk more normally. We got a big breakfast and then headed to the airport for our flight.

Final thoughts.
Marathons are really hard.
I've only been running for 20 months and I've come a long way.
I'm obviously not happy about how the race turned out, but I'm not overly upset either.
I'm looking forward to my next marathon where I will try to break 4:30 again.

Lou - :worship: Ditto on the 10 miles, you are my heat-hero!! Wish I had a sil w/ a pool! My sil just annoys my brother & milks him for all he's worth :rolleyes1 . But I digress....

Jodi - I can't complain. Just got back from SIL's pool and it was very nice. They live 1 mile from my house and have one of those pools with the attached hot tub that dumps into the pool. Summers for me are all about mooching. SIL has a pool. Next door neighbor has a speed boat and takes us out whenever we want. And one of my closest friends has a house down Ocean City, NJ and we hang out there all summer. With these gas prices I am not complaining.

Cindy - Great race report. I always think of SD as warm and dry but it looks like you hit a HOT day. Your race was how I described WDW. There's nothing worse then hitting that 19-20 mile mark and knowing you have another hour of running to go and you feel like $#!+. Glad you toughed it out. Sorry to hear Matt had a rough time.

This was my XT day....

Bike: 3.37 Miles in 20 min.
Cross-trainer: 3.1 Miles in 29:51

Lou~ I am excited that both you and I are going to run the MCM and Phila. Marathons! Woo Hoo!

Cindy~ Thanks for the great race report! Good job toughing out the last 6 or 7 miles!

Happy training!

Howard

Lou~ I am excited that both you and I are going to run the MCM and Phila. Marathons! Woo Hoo!

Howard - That is pretty cool!

I forgot to mention I rode my bike to SIL's pool (1 mile up and 1 mile back) this afternoon on top of the 10 miles. I worked from home today while family swam all day. I did swim twice during the day so I had a pretty active day. Back to working right now but I'm phasing out and hence browsing the boards for a few. :bored:

Hey guys.

Cindy - LOVE the race report & am happy you're satisfied with the race you ran. Heat will really, really mess with you, I can attest to that! Love the 6-pack in bed part:rotfl2: ! Tell Matt good job & to give himself a break now, heal up a bit b4 NYC!

I ran 4 this a.m. b4 the sun came up...like my son would say, "the sun is my arch nemesis". Yes, he's a geek.:thumbsup2

like my son would say, "the sun is my arch nemesis". Yes, he's a geek.:thumbsup2

ah, I think your DS and my DS must have been separated at birth.:rotfl:

Will someone tell me when I have to start training for Philly?!?!?:confused3

Still looking for Disney hotel suggestions...

Cindy - Loved the race report and especially your final thoughts - definitely all true!! I am also looking at 4:30 for Philly but how seriously can you take a girl who hasn't run in over a month:confused3 ?

Colleen - My Philly training program starts 8/4. Room suggestions are POFQ, Pop & Poly:thumbsup2

Lou - :rotfl: with summer being all about mooching! It looks like you've got it made in the shade:thumbsup2 . I'll be mooching off my DH for his central air and pool once I move out:rotfl2: in a few weeks.

Jodi - If you're coming up next weekend, make sure you drop by during DD's birthday party. I can't think of a better time than 15 seven year-olds splashing around in the pool:hippie:

Nothing for me this morning since I slept until 6:30:scared1: which NEVER happens. It's gotta be the heat. Poor DD has a field trip today and it's supposed to be 96 degrees today. I hope everyone is managing to stay cool and being careful with the outside running:hug: . I have to go back to the ortho on Thursday so we'll see what he had to tell me:listen: .

I'm alive and all is well. I have been dropping in frequently to read posts, but haven't posted myself.

Chet and Miranda left yesterday for a month in Europe with my Sister. Tracy got up early this morning to start her DL Half training. I've been repeating the first month's training schedule until it's time to train for Philly (7/21).

Got to get back to work.

I only have a minute to post, but I wanted to thank Cindy for the race report. I'm really impressed that you persevered in those conditions. It really sounds like you struggled the last 6 miles of the course. My hat's off to you for sticking with it, and finishing with your PR. WTG!!! :thumbsup2

This morning's effort:

Miles: 3
Time: 28:06
Pace: 9:22

I got out "before the heat"... whatever that means. It was close to 80 and REALLY, REALLY humid already at 6:15 AM this morning.

Happy training!

Howard

This morning's effort:

Miles: 5
Time: 47:12
Pace: 9:26

My splits:

9:10
9:34
9:13
9:55
9:21

It is getting a bit easier and my pace is getting progressively faster. That will increase as I shed some pounds and build up my leg strength.

I hope everyone is well.

Chester: Glad to see you are alive and well. :woohoo:

Hi to everyone... you know who you are!
