I won't mind hanging out at the back of the bus. The funny thing is that the pain is only when I cough or sneeze, when I sit up in the waterbed, or for the first 3 or 4 miles when I run. It's been going on since I got the sinus infection after Labor Day. I've got some prescription Ibuprofen to take during the marathon if it acts up.

Cindy
I throw out pace obsession and replace it with heart rate obsession. It's worked for me for the Minnie 15k, the DL Half, the RFTT 10k and for the TOT 13k. It didn't work for me during the 2007 MCM because I ignored my "plan" and started at what seemed to be a comfortable pace. I was above my planned heart rate and it caught up to me at about 15 miles. I still PR'd, but I think I would have had a better time by sticking below anerobic threshold until the 20 mile point and then running negative splits. Anyway, this time I plan on sticking to my planed heart rate targets.

Jodi
I actually hate taking the time off from running - especially the mid-week runs. It's really wrecked my schedule.

Sara
The injury hasn't really been a struggle since it isn't constant. But, I would really like to get past it since it was really making me feel like a cripple, especially during the first 100 yards when I started running. Luckily it is not affecting everyday activities.

Lou
Tough call about whether to change shoes this close to a marathon. Last year for MCM I ran in an "out of the box" pair - but they were a brand and model I was familiar with, I just bought them a half size larger because I kept getting blisters on the ends of my toes. I've got a new pair of the same shoes that will be "out of the box" for Philly since I won't be getting very many miles in before the race.

Howard
Good luck with working out the PF. I've been having a little "tightness" in my right heel when I start moving. It usually quickly goes away.

Is your night running in town or in the suburbs? I usually wear a blinking red led light in front since I run in the neighborhood roads facing traffic. Plus, it helps make me more visible when people are backing out of their driveways. Be safe out there.

Mike
Don't count out the possibility of an Alien implant place during an abduction and examination. Tracy has been watching these shows........

Jen
I had a 1 hour wait in line to vote this morning. Other people in the office said they had less than a half hour.

Nice costumes. Butch makes a good Mr. Potato Head. It was good seeing you guys again at TOT. I need to get a longer head start on Butch - he always blows past me about 3/4's through the race.

Happy training to all,

Chester

I do occasionally have these strange dreams about being "probed".:scared1:

We had some political hoopla here last night. Obama had a rally at the local fairground at 9:00 last night. At first they were expecting 30-40,000 but they estimate the actual count somewhere closer to 100,000.

Unfortunately, the fairgrounds are about a quarter mile down the road from the girls' elementary school, where we I had to pick up the older DD's carpool and last evening was conference night for the younger ones. LOTS of crazy traffic and crowds and such.

I was conked out on the couch by the time he finally got there at 10:30 but Kathy said she was watching on TV and could here the delayed "echo" of the actual speech through the bedroom walls. It was about a mile and a half from our house as the crow flies. They must have been using some big speakers!

Chester: I hope the pulled muscle feels better soon, my hip has been giving me a little trouble lately, but it seems better after a mile or so of "loosening up". As for Butch running past you, the most I can say is at least you stick with him 3/4 of the way. I've given up and start behind him and arrange a place to meet up afterwards :rotfl2: I'm pretty sure this is why we train on TMs that are next to each other- that way he can go way faster than me and I still feel like I am keeping up.

I just got new shoes myself in the never ending search to find the "right pair," this search is getting expensive, but hopefully New Balance will not let me down...

Hi everyone!

The PF is still evident. It hurt all day at work. As soon as I got home, I rolled the frozen G2 bottle under it for about 20-25 minutes. It felt marginally better, now it is hurting again. I know this is an issue and I will do my best to get around it and still fit in a few runs here and there until it is a non-issue. I have an older, female, co-worker that suffers from PF. She is not a runner, by any stretch. She had to get a shot in her foot of some sort (Cortizone?) to help her and it was only a temporary fix. I am sure I won't be going down that road. I will keep off of it (running wise) for a few days and re-evaluate my training runs leading up to Philly.

Thanks for the advice everyone... this one's in my court I guess.

Have a great night!

Greetings, oh botty-ones. YAY, no more political commercials!:woohoo:

Mike - Your 8 mile run report had me crackin' up real hard :lmao: :rotfl2: That is SO me...welcome to the darkside young Skywalker...I will train you well. And stop being so shy...we all KNOW you've been "probed" on numerous occasions!;) So have you run yet or what?

Howard - I'm sorry to hear about your aches...now don't forget to alternate hot baths will all this icing!

Dave - Sorry you're so sore, but am glad you're not going to run silly amounts of miles this weekend! You know, I don't even know WHY we went into the City on Sat. We were supposed to go see a play Off-Bway, but it closed about a month ago :rotfl: & for some reason my mom thought we should just keep the date & do in anyway :confused3 . Kind of a big waste of time, but don't tell anyone  .

Chester - Hope you're feeling better, try & relax even though you can't run...can you do any cross training?

Jen - LOVE the picture! Do you have a relative named Kirsten that lives in TX by any chance?? You look a lot like an old friend of mine! NICE JOB ON THAT 13.1:thumbsup2 .

Sara - Hey tool! Is your headache gone or what? Have you been able to run? Details, details about DD's adventure!!

Colleen - What's up hoser? Been walkin'?

Cindy - I like it when you obsess about your times, pace & such  . It makes me happy that I'm not the only freak here

Lou - If you get the same kind of shoes you have now & run in them for the weeks leading up to Philly I don't think you'll have a problem. But seriously, isn't running WAY over-rated? :rotfl2:

OK, I've been dishing out unwanted (no doubt) advice about injuries & cures & such, that I've been smote by the running gods! I have a nasty little pain in the front of my left thigh, deep in there. It hurts if I'm sitting on the edge of a chair, then lean on my left side. I don't know if that's groin pain or not. It started about 2 weeks ago, but then yesterday it hurt for the first time while running. Doesn't really hurt otherwise. Anyone have any ideas? It aches when I stretch, too. :confused3
BTW, it's much different when you CHOOSE not to run because you're lazy, than when you CAN'T run because something hurts :sad2: :sad1: . I don't like this.
I'll go to the gym (which I haven't done in about 4 months) today & get on the elliptical & go backwards (story of my life). Maybe this'll loosen something up?
I guess it'll be another megamoney trip the the accupuncture/massage guy. He'll tell me if it's an injury or a tight muscles or whatever!

Chester - I'm having the blister problem as well. Maybe I'll bump up a size for Philly.

Mike - OH was on the news all night last night. Big battleground state. Not much of a battle though.

Howard - I'm not a doctor or trainer but I would suggest you take it easy on the training runs for the next few weeks. You want to get to Philly as close to injury free as possible.

Jodi - Yeah, it's overrated. Deep thigh pain...that sounds like a football injury. I don't think that's a groin injury but what do I know. When I feel the groin injury pain it's more lower stomach than legs. Get your accupuncture guy to pop that injury one of those long needles. :lmao: Just kidding...rest up so that you can get nuts for Philly.

Hey everyone else!

5 decent (8:30 mpm) miles for me this AM. Some lame hunter decided to kill a deer and dump the guts on my bike trail. Not a pleasant site first thing in the morning. I'll try to squeeze in another 5 or so tomorrow and Friday. Still winging it. I kind of want to get one more 20-miler in this weekend but part of me says start tapering and go into Philly 100% injury free. It's going to hurt no matter how many 20-milers I run.

Lou

Dodo - This, to me, seems like an odd combination of activities. Did you just mess around one day doing different things until something hurt?:confused3

Seriously, I hope it resolves soon.

I did run 5 pathetic miles yesterday. I'm scheduled for 10 today but it's looking the chances of that happening are somewhere between slim and none at this point. No problem. I just have to make sure to get my 20 miler in sometime in the next few days and try to get back on schedule for the taper runs.

On the feel good front, both Kathy and I got carded today buying a bottle of wine. We felt pretty cocky for a few seconds until we saw that the guy was going to card the 60+ year old, completely gray lady behind us too.:confused3 .

As you might expect I took today off from training. My PF wasn't much of an issue today - I didn't have too much discomfort from it. One or two more days rest and I hope it will all be behind me. I am going to make sure though. I will be cautious. I want to make sure I can do two things:

1. Train some more, some way, some time before Philly.
2. Run pain-free in Philly.

A tall order considering what I have felt over the past few days. Thank you for all of the advice and tips. I will put them to good use over the next few days and in the future.

Jodi~ Who "smote" you and where does he (or she) live? I'll send my pal Lou "The Enforcer" to take care of business. Get better soon... from one gimp to another.

I'll keep everyone posted. I am getting really excited about seeing everyone in just a couple weeks!

Have a great night!

:grouphug:

Howard

Registered for a 15K today that I'll attempt:laughing: on Sunday so now I feel justified posting here:worship: The worst part is I've ran this race for the past few years and I hate it:confused3 . The second half is basically uphill:lmao: . I'm feeling mean already:mad: If I didn't sign up I could see another weekend of blowing off a LR and that can't happen:rotfl:

Howard - Really glad you see that PF is nothing to fool around with as it could turn into a chronic PITA. I've also heard NO BAREFOOT - put on shoes as soon as you get out of bed in the a.m. Concentrate on the XT and you should be in fine shape:thumbsup2 .

Mike - Best of luck with the 20-miler and way too funny you guys got carded:laughing: . It's the little things like that which bring such joy!

Lou - Eeeewwww on the deer and my vote is to error on the side of caution and scale back the 20:) .

Jodi - Sorry you've got issues with the thigh:scared1: and I'm currently on the choosing not to run because I'm lazy side of the equation :confused3 hence why I had to shell out cash to force myself to commit to 9 miles on Sunday:lmao: . You'd better get to massage man for a good workup on that thigh to loosen things up:hippie:

Jen - Great picture and sweet job on the 13.1:cheer2:

Lurkers et al - :wave2:

No running to speak of but maybe if the mood strikes me in the a.m.:rolleyes1 I hope everyone's having a great week:grouphug:

Hi guys,

All about me...must go to bed...

20 miles in the book. 4:16 felt OK, ice bath felt even better! Glad it's done.:)

:yay:  :worship: Holy CRAP! Nice goin', Canada!:thumbsup2

Sara - Glad you're running that 15k this Sun. Sometimes we do have to pay for the things we want :rolleyes1 ;) .

Mike - Did you do your 10 yesterday? I can't believe you're gonna do 20 b4 Philly, especially after just doing MCM :confused3 . What's that all about? . I get carded from time to time & it always makes my day :rotfl:. Were you buying Optimators?????:woohoo:

Howie - Glad you're laying off the running for a few, definitely the smart choice. You're so ready for Philly anyway & a pain-free finish is a great goal!

Lou -What's up with the guts in your path??? Someone should wrap those entrails around that hunters neck a give a little tug :rotfl: . Dude, tapering should already be in full swing! What's with the 20 mile talk?:lmao:

Hey all you other Bots.

Did the backwards elliptical for 30 minutes & remembered why I don't go to the gym anymore. Went on the abbductor & adductor machines to see if that flared up the pain & it didn't. And from what you all describe as groin pain, it's not that either. OK, let me give it one more try; when I get out of the car & use that left leg to lift myself out it hurts @ the front of the thigh where it meets the pelvis. Is that any clearer? So I'll give it 2 more days & see if I can run on Sat. Going to the torture guy on Mon.:scared:

Sounds to me like what Howard had a while back - a case of hip flexor strain. It's like when you tweak it and it hurts to lift up the leg. A little R&R and it'll resolve itself pretty quickly but you have to be careful about tweaking it again. Do some gently stretching for the hip flexor as well:thumbsup2 Pop some ibuprofen and do not run until it doesn't hurt to do so:hug: .

Colleen - Yeah for you:yay:

4 fast miles for me this morning:banana: The fear of embarrassment this weekend has me inspired:rotfl: Have a great day guys:grouphug:

Good morning! Just a quick hi from me today. Been a busy week at work.

Colleen - Awesome job on the 20!

Sara - Good Luck on the 15K!

I hope all you on the injured list feel better soon!

Hey yeah, that's exactly what it is! Thanks, Doc!;)

Nice job on the 4 quickies!:rolleyes1 ;)

OK, this is going to sound like a stupid question to all of you out there, but here goes; when being told to take ibuprofen for an injury like this, is it more than just curing a symptom? I mean, is it therapeutic in any way, like permanently helping the swelling of an inflamed.. whatever? Does it aid in recovery? I never take ibuprofen for any running-related pain. Every once in a while I'll take it for a headache & it works great. Maybe you can address this ? Mike. And if I want to ward off any pain during a marathon, is it ok to load up on Ibu...beforehand? Or will it really mess up my kidney function? (I thought it was acetaminophen that did that).

I'll defer to Mike as the authoritypopcorn:: but it's my understanding that ibuprofen reduces inflammation which aids healing. However, NO ibuprofen before a marathon - TYLENOL. WDW Marathon programs specifically outlines why this is if you want to check it out but you need to avoid ibuprofen 48 hours pre-marathon and then it's safe post-marathon for reducing inflammation and pain relief. Tylenol 8 hour or Aleve are okay to dose up on before you run:thumbsup2 . Feel better:wizard:

Lou - I need your help. I know we've been over this before, but as I begin to super-obsess about the marathon, my travel plans come into play as well & my brain needs to make a little map inside itself so I can relax....:sad2:
The train station is obviously on 30th St. & on the map :surfweb: it looks far from our hotel & that we'd have to cross major highways to get there?:confused3 Should we take a taxi?
Once @ the hotel, can we walk to the expo? I think we can definitely walk to the start (then just keep running past the finish line to pack & get to the train station on time :rotfl2: ), right?
Poor Bruce, he's SO gonna need someone to hold his hand  ...any takers, Kathy?:rolleyes1
One last question, Lou. Will the marathon route slow a taxi down when I'm making a quick dash to the train station after I run? I'm assuming the course will still be open. Should I take a subway instead? I like subways :yay:

this sounds like the "minor running injuries thread" lately-- I hope everyone is feeling better by race day :rolleyes1

Howard: I agree with all of the above PF advice, you could also try something like this-- http://www.footsmart.com/P-Plantar-FXT-30055.aspx I'm not brand loyal, but these type of socks that you wear at night really do help improve the PF faster

Lou: the deer thing would have grossed me out completely, maybe would have inspired me to run faster or to stay inside on my TM ;)

as for ibuprofen, yes I agree it has anti-inflammatory effects, so it does help over and above just relieving pain-- just take it with some food or it can cause stomach irritation... everything I've read says don't use it before a race due to kidney issues (although I have used it myself within 48 hours of a race but....)

my run last night was cut short by a power failure, nothing like running on a TM then having it suddenly stop, at least I still have all of my teeth and didn't fall too badly, hopefully it will be better tonight

Yeah, I know, good thing we have a MD and a PharmD (is that what you are called?) on board!:thumbsup2

I feel pretty good today, but I did ice quite a bit before bed.

Sorry can't write more this is a crazy week. Kids have a home swim meet this weekend and I have taken on way too much...

DUH! Forgot you were reading this!! Thanks Doc! I'm just gonna do the ibuprofen thing...Tylenol doesn't do much for me & Aleve? nuthin'!

:headache: OUCH! Glad all your teeth are still present & accounted for!:yay:
