PHENOMENAL WOMAN
by Maya Angelou

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies
I'm not cute or built to suit a model's fashion size
But when I start to tell them
They think I'm telling lies.
I say
It's in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips
The stride of my steps
The curl of my lips.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally
Phenomenal woman
That's me.

I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please
And to a man
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees
Then they swarm around me
A hive of honey bees.
I say
It's the fire in my eyes
And the flash of my teeth
The swing of my waist
And the joy in my feet.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally
Phenomenal woman
That's me.

Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me
They try so much
But they can't touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them
They say they still can't see.
I say
It's in the arch of my back
The sun of my smile
The ride of my breasts
The grace of my style.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally
Phenomenal woman
That's me.

Now you understand
Just why my head's not bowed
I don't shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud
When you see me passing
It ought to make you proud.
I say
It's in the click of my heels
The bend of my hair
The palm of my hand
The need for my care.
'Cause I'm a woman
Phenomenally
Phenomenal woman
That's me.

The junior English teacher at my school shared this poem with the school yesterday.

Last night, my school held a Girls Night Out. For those of you who don't know, all the girls from a school are invited to spend the night, hang out, watch movies, play games, give eachother manicures, do pilates, yoga, and the like.

Our night started off a bit randomly - we had a motivational speaker come in and talk to us about body image, self esteem, and confidence. It was rather interesting, and I personally opened up my mind to what was being discussed.

Anywho. Everyone is different and beautiful in their own way, and some people don't realize that. I'd like to challenge you, even the guys, to open up to yourselves, and find out what physical features you like about yourself. (You could also think about what you like about your personality, habits, etc, but I went with the physical qualities here, because I believe physical qualities influences people to rethink their perspectives on what beauty is. We can debate this, but I'd rather not.)

You can post if you want, you don't have to. I want you to just think.

Everyone looks different. You don't have to be a 00 to be considered beautiful. Remember that.

As for myself, I like my torso. :)

I love my hair.
And my freckles.
And my eyes.
And my height.
Especially my height. Even if I get made fun of being short, I don't see it as a negative attention. I enjoy getting noticed (as I don't get noticed very often), and this is something that people like to mention to me (like I don't even know ;]) Sides, I'm pretty much guaranteed that every guy I meet is going to be taller than me (and in some cases I don't even go up to their shoulders).

I also sort of like my feet. They're small and petite.. and idk, I just like them that way.

I love my eyes.. one is two different colors.
I love my skin tone.
I love my nose.
I love my mouth.
I love my body shape.
I love my hair.
I love my fingernails.
I love my teeth.

I love how very little offends me.
I love how I can manage to have a good time.
I love how I can laugh at myself.
I love how smart I am.
I love how much I love animals.

Oh I love that I'm not easily offended too.
haha it's so hard to offend me.

i love my eyes
i love my feet
i love my hair color

i love my friends :)

I love my eyes =)
They change colors often. (green,brown,hazel)

I also love my height.
I'm short about 5'6 but i like being short, and it fits my body type.

Speaking of: I love my body. Not big, but not super skinny(00)
I'm like a 5 in pants i think.

I love how:
-i have self control.
-i can say what I think, without being afraid of the consequences.
-i don't judge a person, before i get to know them.
-i am the person my friends come to first, when they need to talk about
something.

5 foot 6 is short to you?
Lol, that's like average height xD
I'm like 4 foot 11 and 1/2. It's pretty sad xD

Anyhoozle:

- I love how I don't need to work really hard to get good grades in school. I don't really need to study, so I get more time to other things I enjoy.

- I love how random I am, and that people love me for it. Sometimes it just plain confuses them, but others find it fun.

- I love how expressive my face is. People can read my emotions and thoughts about things so easily by how I react to things.

Hilary, I loved that!

One of the most beautiful girls I have ever seen was a size 16. She was flawless even if she wasn't a 2.

I also love how hard it is for me to get embarrassed. I know a lot of people don't, but I used to be so afraid of embarrassing things happening.. and then I just learned that be loud and doing stupid things was fun xD
I was doing a Facebook note earlier and it asked me the last time I was in an embarrassing situation.. but I really can't remember.

I love my Feet.
Arms.
Eyes.
Ankles (Ok, a little weird, but...)
Most of the time, my hair.
My completely blank expressionless face. (Behind all that acne, which really isn't that bad.)

I love how hard it is to offend me.
To insult me.
To embarass me.
To make me feel I'm going to fail.

I love how much I love to work.
How I'm not afraid to have my own opinion.
How I like to do random nice things for friends even if they don't do something for me.

I love how much I fall. Yes, fall. I think by now I have a signature fall...?
I love how much I can drop my books so many times, and just pick them up and not think twice about it.
I love how some at school think it's cool that I listen to Japanese and French music.
eta...I love my over seriousness.
I love how mature I am.
I love my height.
I love how creative I am.
I love my ability to hold tons of work and stress and keep most promises.

I wish people thought it was cool to listen to French music here. Sadly, because we've been in French for so long, it's considered lame, and you're really really nerdy if you listen to it xD
But I do anyways, I just don't tell people.
Chico Haricot is my favorite =)

Only a couple girls at school think it's cool. They ask me to sing some of it, but I can't.
Others just don't understand, because I can't speak either language how I could like the music and how stupid it is.
I actually started listening to it because of a thread on here.
Patti posted Christophe Mae and others and I started listening to it, and now I love it. Although I've only listened to a couple songs so...
Although I can't find anyplace to buy music by Christophe Mae, so I can't let my friends listen at school...it's annoying.

Mm. I listen to Suteki Da Ne, but I obviously have no idea what they're saying (well it's something about the trees and .. the moon? xD). It's probably hilarious trying to watch me sing it.

I don't listen to too much French music, because a lot of the popular stuff round here like Marie Mae, and her music is wayyy to pop for me to listen to.

I love my lips.
I love my feet.
I do actually really like how I look in some clothes. I'm curvy and I look good like that, although it took me a while to realize it. I think I'm pretty.
I love my fingernails.
I LOVE my height. I like being a short person. I think it makes me cuter.
I do like that my hair is curly, I just can't seem to figure out what to do with it.

I LOVE how I've already graduated.
I like how I'm intelligent and mature.
I love how I smile a lot and seem to be very welcoming of others.
I love my humor.
I love my voice.

Haha. I've got the piano version of it, so I can't sing it.
I can kinda sing some of the J-Pop songs I listen to, since I've listened to them so many times. But when I do try to sing them a bit when I'm home alone, it's not good...at all. xD

It's harder for me to find music in different languages. I can't read about artists because it's in that language...and I don't know it. I also don't listen to much of either japanese or french, because I can't find the artist on itunes.

I love my eyes,
i love my body..
i love my arms
i love how good i look in sweats, lol
i love how mature i really am, because i've been through so much
i love my hair
I love how retarted i can ask sometimes
and I love how empathetic i am
