Took the dogs for a walk today and they saw a… PHEASANT! The penny dropped and they went hell for leather, bats out of hell after the daft bird that first tried running for it and eventually decided that flying was the better option. They almost got the thing!

We had one roost in our trees a few months ago. In the suburbs about 20 minutes north of Detroit. We used to get them in the woods when I was a kid.

Pheasants are very stupid creatures. If only they stayed quiet, my dog would ignore them, but no, they have to squawk. Then my dog forgets all his training and instinctively goes into full retriever mode. My previous retriever caught a guinea fowl, but luckily because retrievers are soft mouthed he didn’t hurt it, just brought it back and presented it to me.

My last dog got a pheasant in our back yard once. I saw it happening and ran out, so the pheasant was able to get over the fence and away. Oddly, it really upset me. I kept telling her that was not very ladylike. Sometimes I forgot she was a dog.

No more pheasant in the yard, but I have a feeling my new dog would be terrified! She goes after rabbits but I think the size of a pheasant would intimidate her - even though she's bigger than our old dog.
