Pez Easter Egg Hunt Debacle

At WL last year, at the candy scramble, a mom pushed under the ropes to "Help" her kid get the carrot to win the prize. We were at the toddler section (so I think max age was 4). The CMs said we could cross the rope to help our kids, but none of us did except the lady that pushed her way to the carrot. Other parents boo'd her! Minnie Mouse ended up helping my 3 year old pick up candy in his bag, which is a better experience, IMO, than the cheap non-disney prize they gave away for finding the carrot!

I think this is pretty standard for big egg hunts. We went to several big hunts this year. 2 of them had prize eggs. We were in unts for our 5 year olds and our 2 year old. Both had parents running for the golden egg and pointing it out to their kids. Luckily, that was the extent of the 'bad stuff' we saw this year.
We also went to a "glow hunt" which happened after dark and all of the kids brought flashlights. That seemed very dangerous and a lot of kids left crying. If you lost your child in the dark there was no way to find them. It was kind of crazy.

This is why we hold our own egg hunt in our own backyard. No jackhole parents to hovercraft and no jerky kids to ruin it for my precious snowflakes!

Sadly, every year there seems to be a report of this happening somewhere someplace. A few years ago there was a fracas in suburban Baltimore. I think there might have even been a few arrests involved.

Reminds me of the parents at MK who push other people out of the way so they can get a front row for the parade. Saw that the last time we were at MK where these 2 adults with no kids pushed kids out of the way to be front row.

The ladies at our parish ran the egg hunt like a nuclear power plant. I can't imagine any of the parents crossing them. Our Easter dresses never even got soiled!

Can we bring that normal social thing back where everybody doesn't win, everybody has to deal with disappointment, and we learn to cope with this? It seems like parents who try to teach this to kids have to compete for resources. I always feel sad for them.

I used to do a little neighborhood hunt when dd was little. The first year I had to put dd in the house because she was running around like a lunatic grabbing all the eggs ahead of the other kids. After that year I had to set a limit on the number of eggs each kid was allowed to find. It's pretty embarrassing when your own kid is the worst behaved in the group.

I hate to be the one to tell you this but you're doing parenting all wrong.

The first rule of parenting club is your child is always the brightest, most beautiful, fastest, most talented and well behaved one in the bunch -- no matter what. Never admit your child can do wrong.

A parent admitting her child isn't perfect at all times, how refreshing, lol!

We went to an egg hunt at a local historic site, a place that charges admission. It was very well done: 3 different fields for various age groups, 5 different egg hunt times, they stamped your hand when you exchanged your eggs for candy, so you could only do 1 hunt. They also had lots of other activities, like easter olympics and races.

There were lots of egg hunts to choose from, but we chose the one that charged admission in order to avoid the scummy people that tend to show up and ruin free events. We ended up having a really nice day, with very little crowd.

We went to an event where admission was charged. They also had three fields and three start times, although there was no exchange. Each plastic egg contained a trinket or small piece of candy. That still didn't stop some kids from jumping the start time, parents (who probably weren't even supposed to be there) grabbing things for their kids, and bigger kids intimidating smaller kids competing for the same goodies. And it was a diverse set of people engaging in the bad behavior.

The thing that galled me the most was the obviously overaged kids placed with the younger age groups. That was likely the parents telling them it was OK. Fortunately I don't believe any kids got trampled.

So I guess telling her at age 2 that the world didn't revolve around her was a bad move. Man I hope she gets a good college scholarship because all our money will be needed for therapy.

I've promised mine I will write letters to their future therapists confessing to my lousy parenting. They've assured me it will be novel length!
