On this week's show, during the same week of the Brussels terrorist attack, Pete went too far in his rhetoric calling PETA terrorists and domestic terrorists multiple times because of Sea Worlds decision to adjust the Orka habitats, shows and policies. I really love the podcast and the whole crew, but Pete crossed the line and should apologize to PETA, including animal rights advocates who are long-time listeners and big fans of the entire Dis family of podcasts.

While I may or may not agree with what he said it's his show and his opinion.

Agreed. But, Pete is better than categorizing a group of people concerned about animal welfare as terrorists, while an actual terrorist attack is still playing out on the world stage. My brother and his wife were in Brussels during the attack, missing the bomb at the airport by just a few hours (their flight was at 11am and the bomb went off at 8am). I was jarred beyond belief when Pete used that language. Stark contrast from Kevin saying that thoughts and prayers were for those in Brussels at the start of the show.

I completely understand and I'm glad your brother and his wife are safe. Pete has always been against PETA and likes seaworld. While I don't think I would have used those words myself I am not a fan of PETA and I think seaworld does indeed do good things for marine life.

Referring to a peaceful political group that you don't happen to like as "terrorists" is dishonest and shameful.

Thanks. They are safe and were able to drive to Amsterdam to leave the next day. Terrorism is a very serious word, not to be used lightly, or thrown around against people that you disagree with based on political views.

This thread could become very opinionated and I don't want to go there but personally that's your opinion that they are a peaceful political group. Pete's opinion is they aren't and I might even have to lean towards Pete on that one but that is my opinion. Also politics are against Disboards rules.

I agree with you. He probably could've said it better but he doesn't like PETA.

If you're expecting an apology because your opinion is different than his, I wouldn't hold my breath.
I guess using the word "terrorist" loosely would warrant one (?)
He wasn't likening a bombing at an airport to an animal organization..

Maybe he will surprise us? Like I said, I like Pete and I think he can do better. I'm a big fan. As the they say in Colors of the Wind:

You think the only people who are people
Are the people who look and think like you
But if you walk the footsteps of a stranger
You'll learn things you never knew, you never knew

Alright, calm down. Pete wasn't equating PETA to ISIS. Nor should he apologize...

"PETA funds a number of activists and groups—some with links to militant groups, including the ALF, which the FBI has named as a domestic terrorist threat."

He actually was, when he called them "terrorists."
I'm going to play devils advocate here. This is the definition of terrorism

the use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims

I think it could be argued that PETA uses certain types of violence or intimidation to get political aims. An example could be the blackfish film.

This is not my opinion by the way.

These are garbage sites. Not sure you listed one credible source. Hate to say it there are hundreds of PETA chapters across the country, if they were a true terrorist threat you would be able to quote any major newspaper.

I don't think PETA meets these definitions, yet I would say SeaWorld does more for wildlife than PETA ever will. I have had the misfortune to deal with terrorists, and it is a blurry line. People on a ship trying to ram a whaling ship??? Terrorism does not always involve IEDs and weapons. In the end, it is up to your views, and here in America everyone gets to state their opinions.

When a not for profit spends more on advertising and promotion than the actual cause they back, that's a signal.

I'm not sure how Blackfish used violence or intimidation. Pete said in previous shows that they were loose with the facts, hit job, lied, etc. And yes Blackfish was used to pressure SeaWorld to change. However Blackfish was nominated for an Academy Award, and gives one perspective of the situation. We really need to be careful how we acuse people of terrorism in a world where real terrorism is happening.

Actually Blackfish never got that nomination.

I don't think the film used violence but it could be said it used intimidation. Personally to me blackfish was all one sided and only had one agenda which was to try and hurt seaworld.

A film is not violent. We know what terrorism is, and a movie isn't it. Calling an animal rights group one doesn't like "terrorists" is a dishonor to those who fight the real terrorists and those who have suffered in real terrorist attacks.

I am not a PETA member or extreme animal rights person, btw. As an American & sister of a veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan, I deplore seeing the word "terrorist" thrown around against one's political opponents.
