One of our family friends who is really good in planting vegetables and such had recommended today that I plant my seedlings in pete moss. Has anyone ever used this? I checked the regular store for it but couldn't find it so if alot of you have had good results, then I would go out and purchase a bag. I was told that one bag would cost me around $28.00.

Wowza ! That seems like a lot for a bag of peat!

How much do they get for miracle grow starter mix? That has peat in it as well as vermiculite and a bunch of other stuff.

I mix peat in the soil and have used it for starting seeds because it's light and absorbs the water well. You can start them in loose soil just as well.

Starter mixes go for around 1/3 the price of the pete moss. The size of the pete moss that our family friend told us about-$28.00 is a big big block. It seems like that's the only way to buy it here. He said that the soil has all kinds of bacteria and such, so that the pete moss would work better. I have always used dirt, but was thinking of trying his way that he recommended.

Peat moss is great to start plants in. It's light and allows the roots room to grow and seedlings to emerge. Starter mix is also good.

I found small bags of peat moss in the Home Depot housplants section. Scott's makes it. Lowe's only had the big bags for outdoor gardens. Way too much.
