Pete is obviously not a photographer

Rough quote from the DISBoard show: "Unless you are crazy you'll never fill up an 8 GB memory card on your trip."

Obviously Pete should spend more time on the Photography board, where plenty of us would develop a nervous tick if we only had one 8 GB card with us! Many of us will fill up multiple 8 GB cards on a trip. I can take around 2,000 photos with the size and number of memory cards I have, and will probably be increasing that to at least 2,500 or 3,000 by the end of the year.

Memory is cheap, memories are priceless. Carry lots of cards, take lots of photos. :thumbsup2
hence why i have a camcorder with a 60gb hard drive and then 2 8g memory cards

I am.....guilty. 6213 pics last trip and about 2 hours of HD video across 2 cameras. I bring 2 8gb SD cards, a 16 gb SD card, 2 8gb CF cards, 2 4 GB SD Cards and an SDHC to CF adapter. I also capture Broadcast quility audio while I am taking pictures or videos so that I have good background audio for home movies or for just sitting back and listening to when I am not in my happy place :goodvibes. That is another 2 of the 4GB SD Cards. Christy takes her P&S camera also, and that is another 2GB SD Card.

Yikes, maybe I should change my Screen name to MemoryMike.

FWIW - I shoot RAW.

And you need a bunch of memory when you have this many cameras:

That's my blue LUMIX on your right wrist Mike. Too funny. That was a great group pic. :thumbsup2

I'm planning on getting 3-4 of the 4 gig cards for our first time in the Caribbean plus bringing 2 extension cords for charging batteries and other electronics.

I'm considering a waterproof camera for some of the outings. So, the second camera might require an addition memory card or two.

I'd lose my mind if I only had 8GB worrying I'd run out of memory. For my May solo trip I just got 2 new 4GB cards. I'll be bringing those plus 2x 8GB 5x 2GB.
If I shoot raw and see that I'm getting low I'll shoot jpgs.

If you guys bring Laptops- where do you store them?

The safes in most of the rooms look too small to keep a decent sized laptop, or am I underestimating their size?

I bring a netbook, which will fit in a safe. I also padlock my laptop bag if I am bringing my larger laptops.

I can't divulge too much because of a signed paperwork...but, make sure to document who touches one's laptop and take pictures of how one's electronics look like with a newspaper or that day's date before handing one's said possession to WDW or the baggage services.

Make sure password lock your notebooks--use a lock if it is left in aroom.

I keep either in my laptop bag or on the desk. I've never had a problem with housekeeping, but we usually stay DVC and they are only in our room once or twice per stay. If they want to steal my laptop and lose their job, I guess I'm out a laptop.

I bring my netbook and an external hardrive for backing up the videos and pictures. That lets me wipe the cards every night.

I do the same thing.. I also only shoot in raw so I have no problem filling up an 8 gig... I usually have 2 8 gigs and 4 - 4gigs with me.. I prefer to shoot with the 4 gig cards as if a 8 gig crashes I lose twice as many pictures.

I usually put it inside my suitcase and under the bed. My external I usually just throw in a drawer under some clothing.. I never keep them together while traveling as you never know what may happen. Usually the external goes into John's carry-on while I have the laptop or if driving I put the external in a different bag. Take my laptop, don't mess with my photos !!!!!!

Hi Kate. I'll generally put in in a bag which gets buried in another bag in the closet. This is DVC though and as Don mentioned, I sometimes just leave it out if I'm not scheduled to have service. Never had a problem.

It sits out on the desk (I usually stay at POP). I don't think anyone will take it and if they do they do. I assure you that no one is getting information off of it once they do have it. It is entirely backed up and even the pictures I take that day are replicated back to a server at work that night via a VPN or at the very least sent up to my SkyDrive account. I just take pics with a little point and shoot so I am not sending back 1,000 raw images or anything like that.

Make sure password lock your notebooks

If you are talking about a Windows password it is pretty useless, I can get past that in the time it takes to boot. It is also useless if the drive isn't booted to and is accessed as a slave drive.

I would suggest using TrueCrypt and fully encrypting the drive. Just make sure it is a good password that contains upper case letters, lower case letters, numbers, symbols, and no dictionary words in any language.

Wow, I'm not a photographer but I've filled up several 8's on our trips to WDW. All it takes is one 6 year old, one overly proud mom, several hours of video and pics of every single ride, restaurant, character... You get the idea. Never thought about doing smaller cards so that I don't lose as many pics if something bad were to happen. Thanks for the tip!

I bring my $20 cable lock and secure it to a piece of furniture. Before I look at my photos I back them up.

Passwords can help deter---I suppose one may encrpyt BIOS as well as have a special thumb drive/key...and whatever else there is available on the market. NC Beast does the necessary geek stuff for our computers. Everyone has their own opinions on what is needed.

After one of the ladies said you don't want something to go wrong with your card at Disney got me thinking, maybe I should take two 8GB cards with me.

Which is what happened to us on the last day of a 10 day trip! And that is why we now always format our cards before a trip and we carry 4-5 individual cards in case one goes kablooey. This was 6 or 7 years ago and we got most of the images off the card by sending it to our local specialty camera shop.

If your card goes BAD just put it away and get out a fresh card. There are free recovery tools for saving your pictures. You may only have one or two pictures that you will lose.

THERE IS NO NEED TO FORMART A DEFECTIVE CARD UNTIL YOU PULL YOUR GOOD PICS OFF IT. Unlike a hard drive, it is very hard to physically damage flash memory.

Kathy, this sounds like a good topic for the show!
