I would LOOOOOOVE it if Disney sailed out of Galveston. Then I might actually be able to go on a Disney cruise. I think it would draw a new type of tourist to the Island and allow those of us in the middle of the country to be closer to the magic...or at least those of us in Central Texas!

And I'm pretty sure I've seen 7-day and transatlantic itineraries out of Galveston--pretty much the same as is coming out of any other Atlantic port.

As a Texan I too would love to see this, I pretty much agree that it wont happen but it would be cool

Galveston has been lobbying pretty hard to get new cruise lines in. I think they stand a good shot at getting DCL. It is a very unique location for a port.

I know that there are several Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises that sail out of Galveston.

I think the central location would be a great draw. We would probably go on several DCL cruises over the next few years instead of saving for just one DCL cruise out of either the east or west coast. :thumbsup2

It would be VERY dangerous if DCL started sailing out of Galveston. Too convenient to just drive over for a cruise. We already spend enough on Disney! It would be nice though ... :cloud9:

Right now, Carnival and RCI do Western Caribbean cruises (3-9 day cruises) out of Galveston. Some of their itineraries are ones that Disney Cruise Line does NOT currently include like Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands - Montego Bay, Jamaica - Freeport, Bahamas - Belize - Isla Roatan

I am curious if DCL will start sailing to ports in Jamaica and Cayman Islands? Both seem to be very popular cruise ports, but not currently visited by DCL.

Maybe, DCL will transfer all their Western Caribbean cruises to Galveston and keep their Eastern Caribbean cruises out of Port Canaveral in the winter months????? With four ships sailing in 2012 anything is possible!

My first thought was NO, they need to come to New York. But, with the price point of a Disney Cruise compared to the other lines I honestly doubt I would cruise them much.

Well...since everyone is throwing their choices in the ring...i would love a cruise or two out of Norfolk, Va :-) and if not there, then Baltimore, Md. :goodvibes

Hope you're listening Mr. Holz :goodvibes:goodvibes:goodvibes

Galveston is building a new Boardwalk style please pier...
The same company/man that owns Rain forest Cafe, T-Rex, and Yak and Yeti also is from Galveston. Hmmm, I wonder if he is pulling for DCL to make a part-time home in Galveston?

I wonder if it is coincidental that he is building a pleasure pier a mere 20 miles from his other Pier, the Kemah Boardwalk.

Galveston's Flagship Hotel pier to become amusement park

GALVESTON — The seven-story Flagship Hotel, one of the few hotels built on a pier over the ocean, will be torn down and an amusement park built in its place if the Galveston City Council approves, city officials said Wednesday.
The Galveston Planning Commission unanimously gave its permission Tuesday for the Landry’s restaurant chain to build an amusement park on the pier that will be called the “Pleasure Pier,” according to city spokeswoman Alicia Cahill and a staff report.
The staff report says the hotel, badly damaged by Hurricane Ike in September 2008, will be torn down. The battered hotel and its broken walls have become a massive eyesore and nagging reminder of Ike’s destructive force.
Landry’s last year submitted plans to the Planning Commission for repairing the hotel and building an amusement park on the pier, but the plans approved Tuesday envision a larger amusement park without the hotel, according to the staff report.
Jeff Cantwell, Landry’s senior vice president of development, said the company was reluctant to release any information about its plans for the Flagship until completion of the approval process.
“Once the project plans are complete, along with all due diligence, including financing and approvals, (then) final project details, designs and all schematics will be released,” Cantwell said.
The original application called for a 110-foot-high amusement ride, but the new application asks permission for a 225-foot ride. The application does not state what kind of ride it is.
Last year’s proposal also included a swimming pool and carnival-style amusements. The staff report says Landry’s will have a larger amusement park, but the details have yet to be made public.
The pier was built in the 1940s as a ballroom, outdoor theater, snack bar and fishing pier. The Flagship Hotel was built in 1965 through leases with the then-city-owned pier and was purchased by Landry’s in 2004 for $500,000.
