I've been trying to find a petal lens hood for my 70-210 f/4 lens on the web and have had no luck finding one made for that lens. The only one I can find that I know would fit is a Mennon screw on 62mm one. Is screw on ok? Is it something worth having? A 62mm screw on would fit 3 of my lenses. I'd use it for birds and my DD's softball games. The only hood I own is a cheap rubber screw on one. My understanding is the petal ones are better.
Any advise?
Thanks:)

I don't think there is anything wrong with the old metal screw on type- I have those on several of my lenses- the only problem I see with them is they get scratched up easier and take up more room in your bag since most dont reverse for storage. Are you having a problem with flaring as you are looking for a better hood?

HERE is one I saw on ebay- no idea on the item or vendor though.

They didn't make a petal hood for that lens. It takes the HN-24 screw in metal hood.

According to all the web sites I've read and with my own experience with this lens. You should use a lens hood. Since the glass goes right to the VERY edge of the end of the lens. It is VERY susceptable to lens flare, especially at the 210mm end. I don't have one, but do need to get one.

keh.com has them for $19-25+ shipping.

Another option, is the older rubber screw on lens hoods. If you have a camera store in your area you might be able to find one. I used to use these on my lenses back in the 80's & 90's. The hood collapses down small so they are easier to fit in a bag.

I don't think that hood would be long enough Jeff. Typically the longer the lens the longer the hood. The hood for my 70-300 lens is almost as long as my 18-70mm lens.

Yeah- I was thinking about the replacemet HB-38 hood for the 105vr- which is also 62mm- but it may vignette at 70mm. But if the lens was manufactured for an internal screw mount it would probably not fit anyway.

I was under the impression she already had the factory hood.

Thanks for the info. :) And the name of the hood for my lens! I looked everywhere! A lot of times they give the name of the hood but not which lenses it good for.
This is the one I found.

Would this be too short for a 210mm?
I do have one of the collapsable rubber ones- I'd use that but for some reason I thought that I read somewhere that the petal ones were better. I have been having an occasional sun spot on some photos when the sun is at a certain angle. When should you have a hood on your lens? Always? or just under certain conditions?
Thanks again!

Funny. Thats the same one I found on Amazon. Same seller. Only they want $14.95 thru Amazon. $12.95 thru Ebay. $6 to ship thru Amazon, $3 thru Ebay.

I always have a hood on my lens, even indoors, I'd rather bump the hood against something, than the front of my lens..

at what angle are you getting the sun spot,,,you can get that with any lens or hood if you're shooting towards the sun..

I'd think that hood would be way to short for the 70-210mm lens. The hood for my 18-135mm lens is longer. It looks like that hood is made for a wide angle lens.

I almost always use a hood. Only time I really don't is when I use the pop-up flash on the camera. With that flash the hood creates a shadow on the image.

I've had 2 falls with my camera. One time the hood was on backwards and the lens ended up taking most of the fall. Ended up being $114 in repairs. (If the hood had been on as intended, there would have been no damage to the lens). The 2nd time the hood was on the way it is intended and the hood took the brunt of the fall. No damage to the lens what so ever and a slight crack in the hood.

I can live with a slight crack in a lens hood. $114 to repair a lens wasn't fun.

So now, lens hood is always on. Except for when the lens is in the camera bag.

I have a couple of those lens and use the collapsible rubber hood, I think I got mine from porters.

The rubber ones are kinda handy cause you can adjust the length and compress it to take up less room.
