We are going to a Broadway Show in June. However, our dogs will need to be fed and let out every 4 hours while we are gone.

We are going on an East Coast trip in June also, and I thought that perhaps one of the children going (it is junior high and high school kids) would like to earn some extra cash for the trip.

If a child is interested in the job it would consist of either :

A) Arriving at 8am on Saturday, staying the entire time, and leaving around 8pm or whenever we get back (8pm is the latest).

or

B) Arriving at 12N to feed the dogs and take them out for a bathroom break, giving them a bit of attention. Arriving back at 4pm to take them out for a bathroom break and a bit of attention. Arriving back at 7pm to feed the dogs and take them out for a bathroom break. They would not stay here, but rather stop by every few hours to take care of the dogs.

Either way, I do not care. But what would you pay for this one day job? I have an amount in mind, but would like to see what others think, to see how on-target I am.

Thanks, in advance!

Hi! I own my own dog grooming business and have done this for special clients that don't trust their babies to anyone else. :goodvibes

I would say anywhere from $30-$50....either way you choose to have them come. (all day vs. short visits throughout the day) .

I don't know how many dogs you have...but here (in MA) a pro pet sitter would charge anywhere from $15-$30 per visit....and they would still add on another $5 per pet after the first pet.
The charge for an all day stay for a pro pet sitter would prob be in the $75-$150 range.
With that being said...the pro would be insured and bonded and should also have their pet First Aid and CPR cert. So that would be the difference too.

Good luck! have a nice trip.

$25 maybe for option B? The one time I paid a pet sitter, she charged $12 per visit. Your option B would have cost $36 based on what I paid, but she was running a business, she wasn't a teenager.

How about option C: let the teenager take the dog to his/her house for the day and maybe the dog could play throughout the day and have lots of attention. Pay the teen $20 or $25 for it. You could transport the dog to their house before you go and pick him up on the way home.

My daughter does a lot of pet sitting in our neighborhood and she is 15, almost 16. Since her visits do not require her to drive, it is convenient for everyone.
Right now, she is taking care of two dogs across the street and one house up the hill. They are let out in the morning, watered and fed. The weather is nice and they have invisible fence, so she lets them stay out. She goes back around 3, checks on them, plays with them, lets them in the house, check water, etc. She then goes back around 6-7, lets them out, feeds them again. Goes back between 9 and 10 and settles them down inside for the night.

The family is gone 8 days and pre-paid her $100. She has done this before for shorter trips and they pay her normally in the range of $15 per day. She was THRILLED to get $100 in her pocket as she is saving for a big trip next year!
It should also be noted that we live in a fairly affluent area, Fairfield County, if that has any bearing.

I would say $10 each time the person comes, so $30 if they come by 3 times a day. If they stay there all day i'd probably say that same price range, around $25-30.

I'd say $30 for the second scenario. Dd15 gets $10 an hour babysitting, $7.25 an hour at her job. I'd expect a good job with the playing, so I'd say $10 an hour, taking into account having to get there and back 3 times.

As for the 8 am - 8 pm all Saturday, you'd have to offer a lot more to get my teens to give up an entire Saturday to sit in your house, provided they were free all day (which they probably wouldn't be).

For option A I think you would need to pay by the hour if you want someone to stay at your house all day. To me this would be like babysitting, so I would say between $7-$10/hr, depending on the rates where you live.

For option B, I would say $10-$15 per visit.

You would be hiring a Middle School or High School student? I would probably pay between $15-$20 per day for a teenager to do that. I would also consider if your dogs could wait more than 4 hours between potty breaks. Maybe 3 visits per day instead of 4?

I used to dog sit for a couple people and they paid me $25-$30 per day. Mostly this was for vacation and I stayed at their homes the whole time. Plus they often brought me back a gift from their trip which was always a nice gesture.

For my next door neighbor I also just came by for the day. I would stop in a few times to let him out, give him water and food and just give him some company. I got paid $25 each day I did this.

We would take them out at 8am before we left.

The sitter would need to stop by at noon to feed them & potty break, around 4pm to potty break, and very possibly 7pm to feed & potty break.

Definitely they would need to stop by twice, possibly 3 times (depending on how late we get back).

I was considering paying $40 for the job. Like I said, I would give the option to stay or just stop by.

Taking the dogs out of the house is not an option. I want them to be where they are comfortable and familiar. We also have a cat, but the sitter does not need to worry about him. He is pretty self-sufficient.

This is what we do when my brother comes up to watch the pets for trips. He only comes up when we will be gone for at least 2 days - like when we go to Great Wolf he will come up to watch the dogs.
