I always laugh at the petty arguments that happen on these boards, but I have to say that I get annoyed with people that do not understand grammar that should have been learned in the 3rd grade. I''m FAR from perfect but I understand the difference between to/too, they're/there/their etc.......

Am I alone on this?

Know your naught a loan...

Sorry, I couldn't resist :teeth:. No, you're not alone - but this topic does appear periodically. Prepare yourself for attacks from people defending those with learning disabilities (e.g. dyslexia), those who are too busy to use proper grammar, those who feel it's more important to get the idea across and if you don't like bad grammar don't read those posts....

I know the difference but every once in awhile I am just not paying attention and my fingers start typing faster than my brain is working. Most of the time I don't even notice when people do it and when I do I really don't care one way or another.

I ALWAYS notice when other people do it and it drives me insane! But I would never correct anyone on here.

And I get mad when I mess up. I usually complain out loud to myself hahah. But like a pp said, sometimes my fingers just go faster than my brain. I almost always re-read my posts and I will edit it if I notice I messed up.

I think the only thing that really bothers me is when people use the wrong words. Like there/their or here/hear.

I don't point it out but it bugs me to no END when people write should of/could of. It doesn't even make sense! People, please, it's should've. As in should have.

:headache:

Its the passive-aggressive that gets to me.

What I find funny is when people complain about other peoples grammer but have so many mistakes in their post. And no, no one here it has just happened before around the dis.

Now they're all going to re-read their posts!! ahhaa :goodvibes

Not I ;)

Except my first line in post 2, in which I intentionally used all homonyms, my grammar is fine. In fact, sometimes my grammar is TOO good. I firmly believe a sentence should never end with a preposition, but sometimes using truly proper grammar ends up sounding too pretentious and being more trouble than it's worth!

While I do dislike ending a sentence with a preposition, my favorite sentence that violates this rule of grammar actually does so times five:
"What did you bring that book I didn't want to be read to out of up for?".

my hubby... nebo... has written 5 trip reports.

he and I are both... grammar freaks.

however... when he has written trip reports... I have annoyed him .. to no end.. about various grammatical ....ooops... anhd then he has responded with.." you knoW what .. Diane.... they KNEW whaT i MEANT"
HE AND i GO BACK AND FORTH... CONSTANTLY .... it's a pain in the butt being married to an intelligent person....' in the END,,,, IT DOESN'T MATTER!!!!!... so what!!!???
It drives me nutz!!! if someone dangles a participle.

if someone doesn't say exactly what they mean to say/// shhheesh.. don't pick on people just cause they didn't pass grammar 101.

we are all here to help each other.:cloud9:

:rolleyes1

I never get bothered by incorrect grammar and spelling. As long as I can understand what they're saying, it's all good. There've been a few times I noticed I used "their" instead of "they're", and someone may have thought I was a dolt because I didn't bother to change it.

My newest grammar pet peeve is when people use "that" instead of "who," as in:

I get annoyed with people that (who!) do not understand grammar...

A person is a who, not a that.

Hey, that's my pet peeve, too! It's become a very common error. I hear people on TV, (newscasters, talk show hosts, etc.), making that mistake all the time.

The mistake I always make if I'm not paying attention is typing "to" when it should be "too." I know better, but sometimes I type in a rush.

I agree; I don't understand why people think these words are interchangeable. I highlighted this specific section of your post because it's a good example of a 'check': try substituting the word. Nobody would use the phrase 'making who mistake', right? ;)

Mostly things like goldfish in bowls, bettas with no heaters, bearded dragons on sand, chameleons in glass tanks.... overall, basically when people do no research whatsoever about pets and are either unknowingly (or worse, knowingly and simply not caring) killing their beloved pets. It drives me absolutely mad.

I try to give the benefit of the doubt and assume typos when the post is otherwise readable. I know people are often on autopilot and not proofreading. However, I do often wonder why so many people mix up "advise" and "advice." It's such a common mistake here. Those aren't really words that I would think people would type so often their fingers lead them astray.:confused3

The following both really annoy me:
1. When "definitely" is spelled incorrectly.
2. When there isn't a paragraph break of any sort in a long post. I can't read those at all!

I know my grammar isn't perfect, neither is my spelling but I try. I usually read what I wrote and edit it as needed. And if there's a little red squiggly line under the word chances are, it's spelled incorrectly.

ETA: apostropheabuse.com usually gives me a good laugh.

My biggest pet peeve grammar wise is the mixing up of "to" and "too"

My other big pet peeve is the use of "K" as a subsitiute of "Ok" or "Okay" in a text or instant message. It just drives me batty! For heaven's sake, I know your phone has a QWERTY keyboard. Put it to use! :thumbsup2

I also hate it when people TyPe LiKe ThIs. Is that supposed to be cute? I still catch it on Facebook sometimes. Seriously, stop. You're not in 5th grade anymore.
