I'm stealing this from another bulletin board because it was a fun topic. :)

What are your decorating Pet Peeves? What makes you say to yourself "WHAT were they thinking!!" when you walk into someone's house?

I know a couple of mine are those pre fab slip covers for couches that look like you threw a fitted sheet over your furniture and tied it with a bow. You could hide a small pet under all that fabric and not see them!

Also people that hang pictures so high up on the wall that you can barely see what it is a picture of without a ladder ;)

So what are your pet peeves in decorating?

I don't know if this is a "pet peeve", but I used to work in interior design, and here are some things I would always work on with my customers:

Everything does NOT have to match,

You do not have to decorate your house all in one day, in fact, its better that you choose your furniture, art, knick knacks as you find them. Going into the furniture store and choosing everything on the display room floor is not decorating, its copying someone else's style.

I found this a common theme with people who would hire me, I guess they felt they were not creative enough to put together a home that contained their own personal style.

I agree with Snoopy. You can walk into at least half of the homes in this country and see in their family room:

Sofa loveseat and chair all in the same fabric
2 matching end tables with matching coffee table
2 matching lamps.

There's really nothing wrong with that, but I like using coordinating fabrics, and mixing wood and metal/wrought iron tables. I think it's much more interesting, and personalizes your room.

The other thing that I am not crazy about is when adjoining rooms have completly different color schemes. They don't have to match exactly, but they should coordinate so it's not so jarring to the eye.

LOL....in my house it is the complete oppisite, sometimes I wish something would match...lol. The one thing that is throughout the house is the bleached oak...DH's fave.

I hate over crowding to the point that a house looks messy and cramped. I am more of a open space person.

When we were house hunting we went to one house that was red and black all over. And I mean ALL OVER! Outside and inside was red and black. There was lots of black wroute iron and red flocked wall paper.

Fake plants and flowers...can't stand them. How hard is it to keep an ivy alive, really?
