What do you use to control flea/ticks and as a heart worm preventive?

I use 2 different vets (long story).
One is recommending ivenheart and Frontline, the other is recommending Vetra. I have never heard of Vetra so I looked it up and it did not have favorable reviews. I would love to know of any preventatives that work without all the chemicals too. It's so confusing when they give you all the options.

TIA

I use Frontline Plus for my cats.

And if you check on eBay you will find that there are a few sellers from Australia where you can get it, including air shipping, for less than half the price that vets charge in the US. It is the same company but they have a manufacturing plant in Australia and it is legitimate product, but it is not a prescription-only medication there.

I use Frontline and Interceptor. The frontline I get from Ebay, the Interceptor I get either straight from the vet or 1800petmeds.

Thanks for the replies. Has anyone tried the Vectra for heartworms?

Also my vet will not give me the Rx to be able to order the heartworm meds online.

Really? I can't believe your Vet won't give you your Rx to order online. I would find a new Vet.

I use Frontline Plus (when I use it, which is not often) and Heartgard.

I typically but Frontline from a local feed store and Heartgard through my vet. I don't trust online stores for something as important as heartworm preventative, honestly. 1-800 Pet Meds has already had a lawsuit because the medication was not kept and shipped at the proper temperatures. Besides, my vet is about the same price as online places.

He says his practice stopped providing prescriptions because online stores were selling "fake" or bad versions of the preventative. I was pretty peeved, since it is SO expensive and I already spend a small fortune on my dogs.

But my German Shepherd pretty much tries to eat any other vet I take her to. She's known this one since she was 3 weeks old and doesn't seem to want to destroy him when he pokes places she doesn't like poked. :lmao:

Heartguard and Frontline

Same here. Frontline works great! We had forgotten to give it to her over the winter and somehow she became infested with fleas. We did an application of Frontline and within a few days they were all gone, every single one of them. Never had the problem again.

In Australia we don't need scripts for heartworm/flea medications. I use a product called Sentinel for my German Shepherd - it does heartworm/fleas and some worming. I get mine online - here are some websites - they may ship overseas - not sure on that one.

(I did notice on the last one it did say if you are in the US you need to send them a prescription - don't know if that applies to all of them?)

Good luck and hope this helps. :confused3 :)

We also use Sentinel for our dogs. It's an oral heartworm/flea medication (I think it's a combination of Program and Heartguard) and it works better than anything else we've ever tried!

When we first started using it about 12 years ago, we had an awful infestation of fleas and the topical flea stuff (Frontline, Advantage) did not work for us at all. Our vet also would not write a prescription for us to use online places until our vet stopped carrying Sentinel--then they were willing to write the prescription.

Iverheart for heart worms (it's the generic of Interceptor according to the vet I use).

My dog is allergic to the topical flea/tick meds, so I don't use them. She gets daily brushings to look for fleas/ticks and weekly baths. I will say... I am lucky in that she is a schnauzer... short hair... easy to look through.

Brewers yeast is a natural flea repellent (put it in/on food). I also use a citrus spray on her when she's going to be outside in the woods or long grass to repel ticks. She gets an extra good brushing after she's been in the woods too. The vet also suggested Avon Skin So Soft or rubbing dryer sheets over her fur before taking her outside... or tying one to her collar.

Good luck!

I use Revolution for my two small dogs.
It is suppose to prevent heartworms, fleas, ticks, dog sarcoptic mange and even ear mites.
